Default 16V Turbo... how much HP??

I'm at work and I just can't get the idea out of my head. Not that I'd ever do it, but it's fun to think about...

It looks like the 951 8V intake mani would fit on the 16V head (this is a guess). It seems like it would be possible! I know that there are some turbo'd 968's out there, but is the mounting point for the intake mani different for the 3.0L head?

It's interesting for me to think about b/c of the S's increased Intake and exhaust ports, NTM the 16V head!!!

The downside of all this would be that the inertia loading on the engine would be higher right? The moment of the Bal shafts, bigger (and more) valves, NTM the alt, P/S pump, and the A/C compressor! I would think there would be a lot more turbo lag right?

Anyways... how much HP you think?

the 16v head has different mounting arrangements than the turbo manifold.

the factory 968 turbo used an 8v head off the 1989 944 on a 968 block which matches up to the turbo manifold.

there are people who have done this but it takes some custom work.

I thought the 16v head has much higher compression ratio compared to the 951 and regular 944? That's not really what you want for a forced induction car.

In a nut shell, compression ratio is determined by the pistons.
Although this can be changed by adding thicker headgasket or maching the the head amongst other tricks.

The S2 and 968 heads have a different shape intake port than the 8v head.

compression ratio for the most part is determined by the pistons.

the 16v head is actually better in design for combustion compared to the wedge shape of the 8v head's combustion chamber. you just need to make your turbo pistons work with the extra valves

Short answer, no, they do not bolt together.

Longer, better answer... read the turbo forum and buy a set of pistons for your application. Like my 100mm Bore Wossners that are coated to work in a stock motor with turbo rods and are made for a 16v head....

You can make in excess of 700whp but show me your trillion dollar note first. Actually about $50k will get you something decent, and yes you can get over 700hp to the wheels but they'd want to be REALLY sticky wheels at that...

ps buy Mike's pistons and that will give you a reason to stop dreaming and make something happen sometime!

3 mil headgasket should push the 968 engine to a compression ratio where you could run ~10lbs of boost, of course coupled with a standalone EMS, custom intake and exhaust manifolds, and the right choice of turbo, intercooler, you could make a pretty beastly 16VT machine. If you're capable of fabrication it wouldn't be too bad, paying for all the custom stuff might (see: will probably) be pretty bad.

Edit: Either way it would be a pretty nice powerlevel, way over anything that would be usable in a 944 unless it was set up properly, possibly widebody and some pretty stout suspension/brake upgrades... which also cost money.
