looks like detonation...short on fuel or too much timing judging by the looks of the egdes of the pistons. probably a broken ring land in there once you get them out

 

Hey Jo, sorry about your S3, I have thought about this the past couple of days and I suspect the RacerX chip. That would be Danno and he did most of his work on the Turbo. I would think that the easiest performance improvement on the 968 would be from reducing the margin of safety that Porsche installed on the spark advance. So if he played with that and removed the rev limiter or moved it to a higher RPM your cushion from detonation would be reduced. Also, could you have lost the signal from the knock sensors?
I would bite on your LSD S tranny but I sold the S on Saturday.
Again sorry about your car but it isn't like you don't have some extras too!

 

I'm still wondering about the cause and I'm hoping to complete the rest of the autopsy later this month.

But just to get the facts straight -- I do not believe that "RacerX" chip produced by Speed6.com is related in any way to Danno (Guru Racing). I think it's just the case that they both used the same marketing branding reference to Speed-Racer.


BTW, congratulations on your sale -- I was keeping half an eye on the sale (I have a soft spot for super-high mileage cars -- they are survivors!)

 

That makes sense, I don't recall Danno working on NA chips. His website was called RacerX though so that is where I got the idea. Still the easiest change for more hp on the 968 would be timing so the chip could be a contributor.

That one is in a warehouse -- afterall, you can only keep so many cars nearby with real estate so tight. You should see my brother: he's got 13 cars warehoused, in addition to the 4 keeps at home.

why would someone spend all the time, energy and money to put a LS1 in a car that has dents on every panel? I think it is cheaper to get a mint car, pull the working motor, sell it, and then drop in the chevy motor.

 

I got to see that car in action a couple times - it was cool.

But it can live on as parts!

Yea... lots of good memories with this car.
* Driving across the country and blowing up the first motor (the 36hours non-stop from Yellowstone to New York City probably had something to do with it....).
* 968 engine conversion and grenading the transmission that couldn't handle the power
* changing a rear axle on Newbury street in Boston
* snow tires
* making 944spec guys wonder why they can't walk away from a stock ride-height 944 on street tires
