Post Why are the early 944's left out?

I did some research and it all turned up the same...any major (Big Reds) brake upgrade is for the '86 and up. Why won't they work on any early 944 car? Is there some offset issue, slight bolt pattern differnces? Or are dismantlers trying to get rid of all their Turbo suspensions? Just curious as to why I can't run big calipers and bring my car to a smoking hault.

Bolt pattern's the same, offset's not. You need more space to fit the larger components.

Actually, the same upgrade that can be done to an '86, should work for you. Your offset is the same, so swapping in the parts from an '86 turbo will work. the only real difference is that the '85.5 and '86 drive the speedo from the trans, yours is driven from the front wheel, so the turbo spindles that you need don't have provisions for the speedo cable.
The choice is yours, speedo or bigger brakes.

Your correct of course, I was thinking of the ABS package on the later cars and the differences in the 15" cookie cutter wheels. Would it not be necessary to upgrade to a 16" or 17" wheel to fit the larger brake disc's for the turbos?

A machine shop will easily and cheaply drill a hole trough the spindle to make room for the spedo cable. We did it to the 944 (with 968 suspension). No problem!

Icat, You are correct about the wheels, 16" or larger is needed to clear the brakes (still 23.3mm offset).
mmmbeer, You are also correct in that it can be done, however here in the US, any shop that did this modification could be held legally responsible in the event of failure (however unlikely). Many shops would be unwilling to do this for that reason.

So the only thing I'll have to mess with is the speedo? Then that's not really a problem...I've already planned on putting a Turbo transaxle in the back instead of my granny gear box. So would it be possible to leave what I have in there (spindles and such) and just put the brakes on, or do I have to have '86+ parts for it to bolt to?
