Default turbo problem puzzler-need help

I have an 87 turbo. Just had the turbo rebuilt because it was puffing smoke under boost and running like ? Put the turbo in, runs like a raped ape but still smokes. I should say it smokes when I come off of boost between shifts or down shifting. Doesn't smoke when idling, doesn't smoke after I am through the gears. I has about 10000 miles on a rebuilt engine. Before I had the turbo rebuilt it would smoke all the time even at idle. Maybe its a bad turbo rebuilt but I don't think so , can't be bad rings (crank shaft blow bye) because not smoking all the time or at least I hope not. I sure could use some ideas where to look.
Thanks

Did then engine rebuild include a cylinder head rebuild? New valve stem seals etc?

if the turbo was leaking oil it would be especially smoky under hard acceleration as all kinds of oil would be getting blown into the engine.

It is not smokey under real hard acceleration. Just when I drop the R's on normal shifting or deacceleration. Any other ideas? I am at a loss

Replace your Air Oil Separater seals or possibly the entire AOS. The AOS is the big black plastic thing you put the oil into. There are three seals associated with it. Two are replaceable, one is not unless you buy a new AOS.

Assuming it is really the turbo and not the valve or rings, I'd make sure there isn't too much oil/pressure going to the turbo. The crankcase could be pressurizing, pushing oil past the seals. Or the oil return line under the turbo is blocked. Or the vent hose between the AOS and turbo mount is blocked. Or the turbo, if aftermarket, is not set up for proper flow internally. Or your oil pressure is too high. Etc.
