Question S2 Questions

So do S2s have essentially all the turbo suspension, brakes, bodywork etc. but just have the 3.0l NA engine? Or are there some things missing?

Thanks,

I'm 98% sure the S2 is mechanically identical to the pre '88 non S turbos with the exception of the 3.0 16V motor and different gear ratios in the tranny.

S2's have the same suspension and brakes of a Normal 1987 and later non-S Turbo but the S2 w/o M30 does have the same anti-sway bars as the Turbo S. M030 equipped S2's are the same car as the Turbo S just with a different engine and transmission.

While the cars have the same body and brakes, there are some differences.

The front struts and springs on the non-M030 S2 are unique to the S2, they are not the same as on the Turbo models. The M030 set-up is the same between the S2 and Turbo.

As pointed out already, the S2 has closer gearing than the Turbo.

I think that the non-M030 wheels are fairly unique to the S2 and I think that the exhaust system is a little different than the Turbo's as well.

FWIW, IMHO the 944 S2 is probably the best deal going in the 944 spectrum as far as daily driveability, reliability, and overall value.

The 951s are awesome cars, but they cost more to buy and maintain.

I have both, and like each for different reasons but I will say that in a "cheap gas" environment like the U.S., the S2 makes for an excellent daily driver.

Michael,
You are of course, correct. I forgot (I don't know how) that the strust and springs were unique to the non-M030 S2.

Oh yeah: the air intake is a little more complicated on the S2, which the air-filter residing underneath the nose panel. So there may be some brackets etc. that are different between the two. There's also no heat shield around the brake res. in the S2. And IIRC, there's a pressurized tubing (for the AC, I believe) in the S2 that's located on top, near the top of the driver's strut. Kinda hard to see in this pic, but it's there:

Oh, and looking at the picture, here's an interesting bit of trivia: the AFM in the S2 is the exact same at the ones in the Turbos, only the one on the S2 is installed Upside down!

This upgrade will still be a daily driver, not track car etc. if I even ever do that. So...

Thanks gents for the info.

Can you tell an M030 car from a normal car just by looking at the wheels (all being stock)?

Both are the "Design 90" seven spoke type, only the regular S2 has 7 and 8 inch widths, whereas the M030 cars are shod with 7.5 and 9 inch widths.

The Design 90 wheels aren't exclusive to the 944 either, since the non-turbo 964 cars had them as well.
