Default water pump stud replacement

Anyone done this? I'm thinking of stainless steel, given the rusty condition exhibited in this latest water pump change.

Problem is, the PET does not list this as an item, Sunset says if I prod them they might figure it out... what about you guys? Anyone have specs on what they should be?

Here's the McMaster-Carr stainless steel stud page.

Any insights appreciated, thanks!

not sure if stainless steel is a good idea. if you break a stainless steel stud in the block you'll have a real hard time drilling stainless steel out.....

when I changed my water pump I had to helicoil every single thread for the bolts as they all stripped when I removed the the old rusted on bolts. I broke one bolt in the block also but was lucky didn't break any studs.

Yummy - you gotta good point there. What strength steel? I'd normally just go for the strongest. Anything building is worth overbuilding, right? Haha. But then I think about the relatively soft aluminum block and wonder if something a little softer is more appropriate.

What say the metallurgical engineers in the group?

I need to replace the waterpump studs as well. The PO replaced the pump, even with one stud broken in the block.

I found this info from Pelican/Rennlist:
6mmX1.25 (thread pitch) x 47mm in length.

Probably have better luck finding a 45mm

After following AF's hint of a possible 45 mm generic long stud....

I hunted PET for a 45mm stud. Found one for the 968 oil pump (on a side
note I can't believe how many parts are shared between the 944 and the
968!!).

Anyways the 968 uses the M6 x 45

Part #999 062 123 02
Edit: This info comes from the last post in: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...ater+pump+stud

I've yet to stop by home depot, or the likes, to see if they have something similar in stock. If you have a chance, let us know.

Would you seriously trust a Home Depot stud made in the cheapest place on earth that they can find?!

Here's what you need:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#93275a014/=2qgbbj

Note that they are made of certified materials with very high tensile strength. They aren't cheap, but I'd guess cheaper than Porsche.

Well, crap, the thread pitch is wrong... M6 x 1.25 is very un-standard. Any chance there's a mistake and it really is 1.0?

The only problem would be the same as with studs; if the threads are truly M6x1.25, no one I can find makes them. I have to believe they are really M6x1.0, I am unable to find anyone who makes a 1.0 stud or bolt.

I think that's what we're talking about, the four water pump studs. At first I thought the question was about the belt tensioner stud, too.
