Where does my oil go?
My 86 951 consumes over a quart of oil per tank of gas. The car has ~133k miles on it. The cylinder head was rebuilt 5k miles ago and I replaced the turbo 2k miles ago. I park in the same spots everyday and have not noticed oil drips. The car smokes blue when cold on start up but very quickly stops smoking. Under hard accelleration, eg- downshift to first and nail a hairpin or pop down into third at 75mph and full throttle to red line, the car smokes black. I believe that the black smoke is unburt fuel as I have autothority chips for the K27DR upgrade.
How do I diagnose this problem? What would you do? Leakdown test? Pull a spark plug? Put phosphoressing dye in the oil?
Thanks, Matt

When you say that the head was redone 5k ago, did you get new valve guides and seats, and kept the old valves? This might be the problem. Unless you got smaller seats to compensate for the wear, there might be some leakage. Since you get a few puffs at start up, I'd say that is the case. Really not a problem.
I have never known a Porsche that did not use oil. It is normal operation. I think 1/4 to 1/2 quart per tank is normal, and the other 1/2 is burning up with combustion. It takes a bit more oil to cause a smoking condition while running. Check the plugs, and perhaps you will see one that is a bit more oily or dark than the others. That might be bad guide. If they are all the same, then it might be on the exhaust side.
Just keep it full and enjoy.

Matt,
One quart oil/20 gallons gas sounds like a lot (unless of course yours is a 2-stroke turbo )
As a data point, my engine is 120k, and I consume about 1 quart/120 gallons of gas, and I drive my car quite hard (however, I'm only getting about 17 miles to the gallon, can anyone tell where my gas is going? )
Sounds to me like you're simply burning oil.

I'd go with rings also.....
I had my head re-built 2000 Klms ago and haven't burnt a drop of oil since the re-build.....not a drop.
The oil was full when I got it back, and it's still full now, and I have done some spirited driving.
