Great color - my favorite I think. That engine bay is nice - you just need a new coolant reservoir and it will look like it just rolled off the dealer lot.

Rick, I would be happy to cover other 'listers dashes in Alcantara, leather, vinyl. Send them and I will repair and cover.

Knfeparty, what do you mean 10 speaker system? And thanks for the place for leather. I'll have to check my sample books from my suppliers to see if they have the color too.

Kem, The zip ties are from the PO. Kinda funny that he did that and did not trim them. Something to do to better it.
Thanks for all the nice compliments. A few things on the to get list, new sun visor clips- came out to the car after work and the clip broke, now the visor is hanging. I also want to get a cover for the car because it sits out in the sun of AZ all day. any suggestions for a good quality cover for heat and dust?

There's a VW part that is better than the OEM part; quick search should find you the part number.
Wait, nvm, I have a link for a page with it and others:

Kem, I looked at the zip ties today, those are from the factory. Just that nice of a car

Jack, Thanks for the link for the visors clip.

Last night I was driving to a PCA meeting in the evening and had the A/C on and the car temp gauge read almost to the red. The fan was on high and on the coldest setting. It was hot, but I wouldnt think that it should get that hot. What can I check to make sure that it doesnt get that hot again. Remember, I live in the desert, A/C is needed. Any help would be great.

This evening I was playing disk golf and saw the car in the parking lot and it made my smile to see my car. I am liking my car more and more every day. I also checked the gas mileage today, I got 24 and a bit. Is this good, average, or could it be better? Most of my driving is highway.

Depending on how you drive, I'd expect more from an NA. Driving at the 70mph speed limit, I get 30mpg regularly, stock phone dials.

Your 89 has a slightly larger (2.7L) engine, 28~29 mpg? I don't think there were any gearing changes for that year. After the usual "tune up" type things are checked (spark plugs, air filter, tire pressure, etc), a common suspect is the O2 sensor.

Are you overheating just on the hwy? Normal speed? Any problems idling around town for extended periods? You may actually want to do a separate thread on this; a lot of technically inclined peope don't read the "welcome" threads based on the title.

For another data point, here's my recent mileage:

The car is pretty well sorted at this point (from the standpoint of anything that has an affect on MPG). I had a HUGE gain (like 4-5 MPG city) when I put a fresh head on it and did all of the vac lines and the other while you're in theres.

Thanks for the info on mileage, One thing I did, I was talking to the PO about the car and we started talking about the tires. He said he ran 26-28lbs, he said that was a little low for the recommended rate. I checked the tires and they say no more than 50lbs so am running 40lbs at all four corners. Will be a little firmer of a ride but if I can get more mph than Im good. Right now Im driving to Lake Havasu City from Phoenix and back on the weekends its 220 miles one way. When I get gas next time I will check and post results.
