Default Anyone see the 944 article in "Excellence" ??

It documented the Raetech factory backed 944 tube frame race car that in its final form produced 350 HP from a normally aspirated 2.5L

WOW

How's the RSX doing? Any changes over the past year? Mine is pretty much stock again.

the guys who built this (and still race it) are still in business... I was thinking of giving them a call...

If I could get 300 out of my 3.0L I would be in heaven

Don't expect it to be cheap. The article talks about custom pistons, custom cam, special 944 GTR crank from Porsche motorsport and special cylinder walls sleeves. Plus 968 valves, custom intake manifold, custom headers.

heres my idea of trying to go about something like this:

-968 block (very strong block architecture and oil squirters) dry sleeved at 104mm
-lightened and balanced to the max 2.5L crank
-custom forged titanium short-stroke rods
-custom 12.5:1 4v 104mm pistons
-S2 head with custom cams and solid lifters and a better tensioner, oversized valves and ports and stiffer springs
-dry-sump oiling with external oil cooler
-manual steering, no ac, no balance shafts, and a large alternator
-some kind of custom variable-length intake manifold (long runners for torque, short runners/huge plenum for high rpm hp) along with an open 3" exhaust

and a computer and fueling system to match

trouble is even at 100% volumetric efficiency this 2.7 engine would need to spin at least 9500RPM to get the amount of airflow for 300HP.

we are talking crank HP or wheel HP?

cause i know we got honda K24 frankenstein 2.4L engines to 260-270whp with pretty much just cams and bolt ons spinning to 7600 RPM's.

crank

its possible to go over 100% VE but difficult, hondas are ridiculous for VE out of the box and can be improved tremendously though

How come everybody gets their issue of Excellence before me? I think my mailman and his buddies go off to the park and read my mags before I get them. He might drive a Jeep but I know deep down he's a Porsche freak.

I have had excellence for over 5 years. Very happy with it. Lost of water cooled coveravge these days. Then again all the new stuff IS watercooled.

Really not the most 944 content, but still a nice read.
