Default Battery Relocation to UK Spec - Need Pics Please.

I want to relocate the battery on my car to the left-rear area as it is on UK cars, so I need some pics please from UK listers. I understand that larger gauge wire is used and that it is routed inside the car and through the inner sills to the firewall. Any pics or info would be greatly appreciated. Also wondering is this the same for all Euro cars or just the RHD UK & ROW ones?

I always thought that the location of the battery in our US cars were in the worst place possible. The UK cars have the battery in the rear, on the opposite side from the fuel tank. It's located much lower, not subject to the weather, offsets the weight of the fuel tank, won't damage your dme if it leaks and corrodes, etc, etc.

Any help appreciated.

I believe it is a RHD mod only. I think the main reason was that moving the steering column to the RHS just left no place for the battery to fit under the hood (or bonnet, as they say in RHD land... )

I did this on my car, i routed the wire through the rocker panels, very easy to do, open your door and remove the vent in the door pillar, you will see straight back to the rear cubby area and you will see a hole into the rocker, just fish your wire through there. there are rubber plugs in the rocker panel in the footwell area, best yet, no holes to cut. I ran mine down the passenger side using 2 gauge Flexalene.. Worked very well, i also ran 2 supplimental 6 gauge wires to power the 6 or so wires that feed the relay panel, may be overkill but i havent had any issues. I plan on fusing all 3 links in the rear in case of an accident.

Heres some pics, if you need anything specific let me know and I'll take some more tomorrow (it's dark outside now).

And here's a picture of the battery cable entering the sill (rocker panel), not sure if this is clear, but at the top of the picture is the passenger side front floor mat, and to the right is the seat.

Hope this helps.
I'm about to move to a gel battery located in the rear footwell for better weight distribution and a lower CoG.

Interesting - I have a RHD euro-spec model in NZ, and the battery is front left.

I'd be keen to do this mod too because then I can look at eliminating the swimming pool in the area below the windscreen - those drains are really inadequate!

As far as I'm aware all the UK oval dash cars have the battery back there.

Neat idea. I would think putting it in the right rear would be better for weight distribution. I'm going to look tonight and see what the space looks like.

I was thinking especially if you remove your spare tire, it makes sense to put the battery in the rear opposite the driver. Weighs close to the same as the spare, so it brings the weight distribution back to what it should be, no?

That's probably very true on an otherwise standard car, however if you've removed a similar amount from the front of the car then I think it makes sense to move it to the centre. The battery cable isn't light either, so shortening it means there's another few grammes saved!

944 turbo is 51/49 weight distribution anyway, the 51 is in the front, no?

Those photos of Peter's car are very good because the carpet is out. Clean car, Peter! Is the carpet removed because of weight reduction, or have you been painting?

I would think welding a suitable battery tray into the rear cubby would be the most significant part of this mod... also, it's actually a tight fit for a decent sized battery to sit in there properly, so positioning the tray for height clearance etc. would be important.

I believe the reason you put the battery in the left cubby as opposed to the right is because the fuel tank.

The tank is bellied on the right side (Where the fuel pump is) so you want to counter the weight of the fuel on the right side with the battery on the left..... I believe....

Thanks! I run the car stripped out at the moment, it's a bit noisy (no sound insulation anywhere, just floor mats) but it's a lot of fun.

With regards to the side the battery is on, I was under the impression it helped offset the weight of the driver, so on a LHD car you might want to put it in the other side.
