True for my 1990 S2.

Most put the battery behind the passenger seat, but without the seat if you get my drift.

That said, I like this idea a lot. Lower CG, cleaner engine bay, and an afternoon in the garage, what else could you ask for?

Hi Phil,
If you mean did Porsche fuse it locally when in the original location on late Euro cars (as shown in my original picture) then the answer is no. The battery on mine has since been moved to right behind the passenger seat (it's a gel battery so no need for venting etc), which seems to have worked out well.

Bit late to do that on the track car now as there's no sign it was ever there

But I can always get some pics from my other car. If it's dry I'll try to take some pics on Sunday.

I had to replace the battery on a new 944 2.7 back in 1990. Guy at the battery shop said:

As it is inside the cab - it must be a special battery for the 944 that does not emit any fumes. This was obviously a few years back, and batteries may be different now...

I tried to take some pics of the 944S today as promised but they weren't much good, however I did find an old pic that showed the earth connection more clearly.

i was searching google for battery relocations. and i got mixed responses.

would you just have to extend the + from the stock location to where you want it. the chassis ground (as shown in the picture above). then take the stock ground up front and bolt that somewhere in the engine bay?

i saw a few guys putting a 100amp circuit breaker inline with the +. i guess just for insurance.

I have had several UK 844's - you cannot unlock the boot with the key when the battery is flat. The key only allows power to the hatch release motor - no power and the key is useless. It's a real pain have to crawl over the rear seats, lift the hatch base and get to anything.

The hatch motor, I am informed, runs on the same cuicuit as the the cigar lighter. I've heard there is some cigar lighter plug that has a battery attached that will give just enough power to throw throw the hatch lock. whether this is 6volts or 12, I don't know....

hmm maybe mines an exception. I've had a few flat batteries hence the solar panel trickle charger I now use when I take the car off the road. I haven't had a problem opening the hatch with a very dead battery.

I do know for a fact my clock, interior light and cigarette lighter are on the same circuit. I blew the fuse yesterday topping up my tyres with my cars compressor. My fusebox diagram shows the sunroof (delete on my car) and the tailgate being on the same circuit.

That's not the case on either of my cars (both 1987, one 'Lux' and 944S). The hatch release motor simply pulls the manual lock open - it's all mechanical - just like the key does. On the trackcar I've removed the motor and just use the key.

In terms of relocating the battery I'd simply ignore the original battery earth, add one similar to the UK cars and extend the postive line as necessary. Porsche didn't fit a fuse/breaker near the battery, so I don't think I would, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.
