Well, it's over.
That little problem with the fuel rail was worse than I thought. One quick jaunt to the carwash (literally five hundred feet from my apartment) couldn't hurt anything, could it? Even if it's before my new billet fuel rail from Lindsey Racing arrives?
Well, the guys from the fire department were very sympathetic. But an engine compartment full of char is an engine compartment full of char. And that's annoying.
We'll see what the insurance company has to say, but I can't think they'll be too forthcoming... I had to tell them about the fuel rail. (Any minor malfeasance on my part, and I could kiss my security clearance goodbye, you see.)
They'll probably offer me less than I could get to part it out, but I don't have the facilities and space to do so. I'll probably just have to walk away with whatever they offer.
The lesson of this story is to be very careful. Don't let stuff slide, even if you're going to get it fixed next week. Because otherwise, there might not be a next week, not for your car.

Fate has brought you to the dark side
Tell the insurance company you would like to buy back the "shell". Sometimes they will sell it back to you for a very good price because they really don't have anywhere to put it.
Then you'll have "some" insurance money for a beater until your LS3 arrives!
(I'm sorry about your car. Fire has got to be the worst thing that can happen.)

totally sucks dude. First thing I did when I bought my 951 was order Lindsey's fuel line kit and replaced it. I knew jack nothing about these cars and it took me a few hours to do. Glad I did it...
Hope you can get some $$ out the deal and start looking for the next one...

Well, I'm definitely not sanguine about trying to salvage. Once you have a fire, you can't trust anything.
And, frankly, I'm tired of running to stand still.
At this point, I'm thinking of just waiting six months to put together a decent downpayment, and buying a Cayman.

Pffft. I found out AFTER I bought mine that there was a dash fire at one point. There was a time where I was about to give up and part the car to recoup my losses, but now that I'm close to having it done, I'm glad I kept it.
I guess if you need a reason to walk away from a 944, this is as good as any! I really am sorry to hear about your car though. Hope the insurance company comes through for you.

damn...sorry to hear that. I had a bit of a scare myself with a ruptured fuel line. fortunately, I only drove a short distance and the headers didn't get hot enough to start a fire, but it was certainly quite the scare.
Glad to hear nobody was hurt though - good luck with the insurance company
