Default What would you pay???

A friend of mine has an '89 944 Turbo with 18,000 original miles. The car is absolutely perfect and has never been tracked or abused. It is white with black leather, and fully optioned.

I realize that a car, or anything for that matter, is only worth what someone is willing to pay. With that said, what is this car worth? What would a "fair" price be in today's market?

FWIW, he thinks that he can get $30k for it. I think that's way high. Thoughts???

It is way high. Supreme models of 944 sexiness go for a premium of under 10,000. Panorama will have NAs regularly listed at or above that, but here on Rennlist, most of the sales are around 5,000 for a sorted NA. With 18,000 miles, maybe more.

People think that super low miles means they can get a lot of money for a car. Personally, most people that buy these cars want to drive them or track them - so getting a car with 18k means nothing to them. He has to keep in mind that is his market - and right now the market is tough...definitely a buyers market. I saw two UNREAL 951's go on here - easily with $30-40k in them for ~$15k.

Also, just because the car has 18k doesn't mean it's not going to need $2 worth of work to make it a daily driver. It may not need that much, but the buyer is going to have to at a minimum change belts, rollers, crusty pipes, maybe the clutch or worse.

I think most people that are buying these want to drive them - not park them in their garage and take them to Sonic on Saturday afternoon and stare at it in their garage the rest of the week. So you are right - it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it - but in this market I'd be VERY suprised to see him get more than $16k for it.

That said - I'd love to see some pics.

So I wonder if the antifreeze is original 1989 stuff? No need to change it with only 18k miles, right? Likely to be a few surprises here and there.

I think $30 would have been optimistic, last year. Assuming the car is in mint condition, I'd say anywhere from $23-25k, and only if there is a collector out there. No boost-head or track boy will be buying that car! Most people will be claiming that the low mileage simply means all the gaskets and seals are leaking, etc.

Good luck to him though, I hope he can get a fair amount.

I'm pretty sure there was a 10k mile car that went for about ~25k, but that was several years ago. Values have plummeted.

He can take his original miles, belts, rollers, gaskets, and tranny oil to the bank along with his imaginary 30k.....after he wakes up from his dream of course.

He'd be lucky to get 15k at this market.

i am in the process of negotiating on a 10,000 mile 95 M3. i know what my friend thought it was worth a year ago. I know what happened to the market when i sold my S2 in november. And I have a pretty good idea of what i can get for my 89 Turbo with 51k miles.

I guess it all comes down to what is a collectible car and what is a collector car. the 944 series of cars are just collectibles, as is the all but a few of the M3 series. Then there are exceptions like Pauls factory escort car. that is a collector car. Now, where on the scale of collector cars does that fit in?

for $30k I could buy a nice low mileage 996. would i get a 951 that has original rubber and will probably need a little work to be driveable or would i get a 996? hmmmm. tuff decision.

Unless he has to sell right now I would advise holding off. As long as he keeps the car in mint condition and keeps up with the maintenance the value will only go up on a low mileage rare car like that.

If he does have to sell it then I would start out at 30 and advertise in the Pan and maybe in the DuPont registry or other highline car magazines. I would not advertise the car on Rennlist or Pelican or Autotrader.

+1 on that.

The repair facility next to my business has a 26k 944T in there right now, and the owner is looking to sell it. They asked me about what kind of $$ and I said he'd be lucky to get 15k. I told him to advertise highline and _shipped_ included in the CONUS so whatever was negotiated factor shipping off the top.

I would say that this car is worth every penny of 30k if pristine. I think it will be a tough sell. I would hold onto it.
