heyy jay, sorry this happened. guess the buyer thought long and hard about it those 3 weeks and didnt want it anymore, or maybe found something else. its eBay, it happens alot.

as for the car itself, judging from the pics, it does need minor work. imo, a used car is a USED car. my 944 is in worst condition than yours =( but 67king is right. its worth more to you then it is to some others. remember when i said keep it?? KEEP IT lol.

Guaranteed that a Subaru dealer would auction it, not try to sell it, so they are going to give you low side of what they expect at dealer wholesale auction. I'd guess $2500.

This thread (and some others) is an eye-opener in a lot of respects. For one thing, a $1200 944 is not worth fixing compared to just buying a ready-to-drive later car for $6 - $7k.

Thanks for the replies, all--mostly good advice and insight. I like the trade-in idea, I'll see what I can get. I really would love to keep it because I'll probably be buying another 944 a few years down the road, but right now I really need the cash for a down payment on a used Forester for the beach (as someone remembered and mentioned).

In the meantime, any offers? I am not messing around when I say I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country!

man this is crazy - i guess since i could fix it myself the body work doesnt effect me- but most people wouldnt want to tackle that. I paid $7500 for my 89 944 n/a w/ faded paint in '03 and seemed like a deal at the time!

Amen. In three of four years when I have some cash saved up to buy a 944 for a weekend/track car (instead of a daily driver) I pray that there's a cosmetically banged up 951 or S2 that I can snag.

Its disappointing, but certainly indicates the reality of selling one of these cars. I ended up selling mine for $4,500 and it was in better shape than this one.

Sucks, but what are you gonna do. The car is actually worth what someone will pay for it.

Depressing that it goes so low.

The thing that frustrates me is that recently everyone who has been seriously interested is from at least an 8 hours drive away. I've had multiple people interested from Canada, one from Georgia, Florida, Missouri and a few from California. They hesitate because they can't see it in person--and more importantly, can't drive it. Once you're inside and driving you can't tell the difference between this S2 and a perfect condition 20k mile example (other than the lack of power steering of course)

My patience is running out, I need the cash for a downpayment on an Outback so I can get out on the beach...

I belong to several specialty auto boards, and it is apparent on them that the last place you are likely to sell a car is to someone on there -- those folks already have one! and just like here, posting a FS notice seems to bring more discussion of what's wrong with the car/price than any action. Local ads are more likely to be produce results.

Interesting way to think about it Ross. I certainly have had more interest from my local craigslist ads than here. Any other spots I should try? Is Autotrader worth the cost? I think I'll re-list it on eBay again tomorrow night.

I've had the best luck with the traditional ad in the local paper. Sometimes we forget that many people aren't even hooked up to the internet, or have no idea how to search on it. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper than the 'Bay or AutoTrader. AutoTrader is usually a couple weeks' delay til published.
