1. What year is your 944?
2. My coverlay for my 85.5 944 sucked so bad that I didn't install it. Many here will agree.
It seems to me that the early pre-85.5 cars seem to have a better fit from this product....

I installed a coverlay on my 84 last summer. While its certainly not perfect I think it looks much better than cracks. Installation does not require removal of the dash. It just gets glued on top of the original dash. The installation is quite simple.

I took the dash off my 951 to install my coverlay. It is not necessary, but I was able to get a much better fit by using clamps and weights while the glue dried. So far it looks nice (far better than a cracked dash).

I put one on my 84 944 in the summer of 2000. The sun has finally taken it's toll. This winter it has shrunk a 1/4". It had to be cut in the middle to allow the defroster vents to be uncovered. It was pretty good for a couple years and a lot cheaper than a new dash. I'll probably buy another one in the spring.

This week I am getting a new factory dash to install in my '86 944. (thank you, eBay!)
I have a 'like new' Coverlay for sale - never glued on, fit the later style dash. I bought it before finding the OEM dash. The Coverlay is brown but can be dyed any color you want (I may go ahead and dye it black if no one wants brown). Someone speak up if you're interested.
With regard to Coverlay, my take is that it is the best solution for the money that can be found. However, it is not perfect. If exposed to very hot sunlight, it may warp over time. And the fact is that YOU will always know it's a cover, even if your passengers do not. It's not as good as a new dash (obviously) but much better than a cracked dash.

I've heard that you can peel off the cracked leather factory cover, remove the left-over adhesive and there will be perfect vinyl dash underneith. Anyone done this? This was on a 928 by the way, I wonder if the 944 is the same... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
