space:
by "ironman" i meant only "the quintessence of metal--Ironman by Black Sabbath"... once you have heard this song you will occasionally have flashbacks like if you did too much acid and find yourself singing
da duh da da duh
da da da da da d da da duh
an even more "hard" version of this song appears on the sabbath cover album "nativity in black" it features therapy? playing the classic riff and "ozzy" doing the vocals (as if that's somehow different fromt he original).
then along came the cardigans and laid down some simple synthetic beat and lightly tinkling soothing keyboard sounds and somehow transformed a simple, powerful guitar riff of the most headbanging variety into the teeth grinding banality of the most week insipid "ez-listening" chick music crap. profane is an understatement. the cardigans will forever suck more than any words can convey.
I enjoyed reading this post and trying to glean people's musical tastes from the bands they named... but nib5 (hmmm... another sabbath reference?) you stumped me. either those are all so "contemperorary" (ie, they only just appeared on trl last week) that i haven't heard of them yet, or they are unknown in the us, or something.... what kind of music are all those bands? i wish i could still get mp3's... i like songs that make cops angry.
hey if anyone has server space for a 4.5MB mp3 file, i'd like to post that atmosphere song so y'all can see that it is possible for a white dude from minniapolis to ryhme... note that you also have to be able to accept an incoming mail of that size.
we really need a sublime song but there aren't enough car references... maybe "burritos"? i had that song stuck in my head for the duration of my last car project--changing all my hoses out.
or at least i kept hearing that line
"i don't wanna do a bong load/and go and wrench on the car". it would be cool to have a classical song on there too. it's not very impressive on a wimpy stereo, but with good sound you can really get carried along by some of that stuff. someone played a cd of rachmaninaf (sic??) in my old (audiophile endowed) car and it was pretty awesome.

Thanks for the props - but re Zappa - hell, yes, Zappa IS driving music. The song I picked for my list features the "Last Imaginary Guitar Solo" and when you are blasting along out in the middle of the desert with it cranked, then you will understand why I included it!
Best,
T
PS - "another great song to get pumped up for a drive is the beastie boys' "high plains drifter". it's funny and fast has a few car-related lines." Hell, yes, that one is hilarious! The Eagles sample is SOOO well-used. Then there is "Car Thief"....

The music I listed is 60% American in origin. The Pixies - Boston Mass. - were the greatest US band of the late 80's -early 90's - as Metallica were all done by '86 with a couple of exceptions. (The Pixies rewrote the rule book for alternate guitar bands - the soft metalheads tended to hate them - 'guitar rapists' said one Winger fan in a contemporary Guitar Player - obviously that made me very happy).
QOTSA are from Phoenix AZ - they have a website with RealPlayer clips. "Tension Head" will take the skin off your face.
The Dandy Warhols - Portland OR - sixties/ country tinged guitar & organ rock with sarcastic witty lyrics. Their first album from 1995 contained a song/jam called 'It's a Fast Drivin' Rave Up with the Dandy Warhols Sixteen Minutes" it IS 16 minutes long and is good for fast driving - can't say fairer than that.
Leftfield are from London - A dance act with a dub tinged sound and a desire to keep woofer repairmen in business.
Carl Orff - German or Austrian (i'm not sure) the actual piece is 'O Fortuna' it is from 1935 and is a choral and orchestral piece sung in Latin.
You'll hate me for this - I love the Cardigans, they are huge Black Sabbath fans (as am I) and sprinkle their output with lyrical & musical references left, right & centre. Ironman is not meant to be taken seriously. Swedes are very droll. (my tag comes from my licence plate and not the namesake fuzz bass workout)
I find it funny that that bands can be big in one place and barely known in their home country, Ask the average joe in the UK about Foreigner and they will have no idea who they are / were. This is, of course, a good thing. Now if we can only lose Phil Collins...

Fast Cars - The Buzzcocks

alright, here we go. thanks to ribs for telling me that as a rennlist member i get 200MB of storage space on this server.
this is my top nomination for the driving music disc... you guys should check this track out.

oh yeah, and nib5, sorry for sounding like an idiot... i know who the pixies are... i had just scanned the first part of each song you posted thinking that was the band name and didn't even look at the second part.

Three Wheelin'
We all have a different idea of what driving is, it would seem. I think the suggestions originally being searched for are for the ultimate driving fast mix. Thus (most of) Sublime, and 311's "Amber," while excellent music and often great to drive to, don't qualify. Similarly, anything with a country twang automatically blows.
Songs that talk about driving, indeed driving fast, but still suck are right out.
Heh...I may have to edit my origial list to accomodate the fascist regime that's developing over this mix...

Uh, not! Husker Du did that. Pixies were stale by comparison (though their cover of Jesus And Mary Chain ("Head On" IIRC) totally cooks - I wish JAMC had used full band instead of drum machines etc - which is part of the reason ZZ Top crushes them so utterly, but I digress).

German. Actual full piece name, Carmina Burana. See <a href="http://www.classical.net/music/comp.lst/works/orff-cb/carmlyr.html" target="_blank">http://www.classical.net/music/comp.lst/works/orff-cb/carmlyr.html</a> - quite the ribaldrous little number, no? Makes the Apotheosis dance version (far more overplayed than Higher State of Consciousness) rather appropriate!

Veering further OT, at least it's not from Marooneed aka Space Travellers, starring Gene Hackman and Gregory Peck! "Ironman One, Ironman One, do you read me, over?" AAUUGGHHGHGHGH.
