Well I sold my 88' 951 project car. The new owner came by about a month ago and checked the car out top to bottom and we ended up making a deal a few days later. I cleaned the car and drove it to Road Altanta yesterday to meet the new owner at a DE event that was going on. He plans on having it repainted and using it as a driver/DE car. His father-in-law has a 951 track car and a 944S2, so I think it will be in good hands. The car ran absolutely flawlessly for the trip which is always a plus. Here is a final picture as we parted ways.

Thanks guys! My dad drove down with me so I didn't have to walk back lol. I wish I could have done more with the 88' car but I was just too busy for the amount of time it needed on top of my other 944 projects. I will be moving to Alabama next week and once I get settled I can get back to work on my 86' 951 finally.

Quick question. Looks like you replace the panel under the hatch in the rear. How difficult was that process?

That is just the original white paint under the spoiler. I started to remove the blue paint on the back but never got around to doing anymore than that section.

Colin, I need to shoot you a note. For anyone else reading, I'm the new owner. It is coming along, I've got a lot more of the blue sanded off (tried what you did - I'm guessing you did it shortly after the blue was applied, as it wasn't working for me!). Car is absolutely solid, I'm very happy with it. I'm not sure if you know this, but the transaxle has been replaced. I haven't been able to find the stampings to see if it is an LSD, but it DOES have an oil cooler (not original). I've got a set of Koni (yellows) for it. I may put them on as-is, I may go ahead and convert to coil-overs, it depends on how much spring they can take without a revalve. I'd hoped to get the paint servicable, and attack the suspension, but the paint is going to take more work earlier. Still, overall no complaints.

67 GTO. My first car. Thursday will mark the 20th anniversary of the date I purchased it. The spare parts in the front are a few bits of what I took off of the Merkur XR4Ti (RIP) the 951 is replacing.

Harry, the car already looks better in that state then it did with the blue lol. I'm surprised the stripper method didn't work for you because I had removed some paint as recently as a couple of months ago. I guess it doesn't really matter b/c I was trying to get it back to the original white to make it presentable, but since your getting it painted(which is what it really needs) the sanding will make life much easier.

Did you decide if your going to go back to completely white?

Thanks, it is coming together. Since that picture, I've removed door handles, lenses, door strips, and gotten a lot more of the blue off. Working on the few little spots that need filler today. I'm probably going to get it prepped, and then take it elsewhere for the color. In all likelihood, I'll just keep it white. Two-tone looks cool at the track, but kind of cheesy on the street. I may look into vinyl a little bit later on.

I am still amazed at how rock solid this car is every time I look into it. Can't tell you how happy I am with it!

Good choice on keeping it white. White is like a clean sheet of paper, you can add decals/vinyl if you want and peel them off when your ready for a change. The front windshield molding just slips in and out of a plastic channel very easily to help with your sanding, and the rear windows can be popped out in less then a minute. That always helps for a cleaner paint job as well. Are you going to leave the door strips off when it gets painted?
