Lightbulb 944 Transmission Swap Question

I know this was probably discussed before but I had a quick question... will a 1983 944 2.5 Tranny swap directly into a 1986 944 2.5 car. I have to replace the clutch but figured the guy before me drove it like a dog so I might as well replace the whole thing with newer parts if all is copesetic. I don't want to swap to a worse or less reliable tranny, so I need to know if there are any differences. Thanks a bunch everyone!!

They mount differently, but going from late to early you might just be able to take the mount off. Someone will be along to confirm.

Won't work.
The early transmission doesn't have the holes drilled and tapped for the late mount, and it has no provision for the speedo sensor.

Thank you all very much, I appreciate the info. I'll see what I can do about parts.

At what point did porsche put the provision for the lat mount on the early trans? I just swapped an early trans into my late car just fine. You need to look and the top of the trans and see if it has the two bolt holes that go side ways, just infront of the vent, just in front of the reverse sensor. I can take a pic if you need. You will also have to inspect the trans to see if you can retrofit the speed sensor, i was able to in my early transmission.
