Default 944 turbo with low oil pressure

Hi guys,

Been a while and I really want a 944 turbo to play with . I dont mind a fixer uper since I have a garage and a daily driver, but I dont want something that doesnt run.

I found an 86 944 turbo on ebay *item number 320362587931*. Seems decent enough, but the low oil pressure is scary. The rust and body work looks bad, but I'm sure that wouldnt be too hard to fix.

What do you guys think?? I can probably get a good price on it *have to get it shipped though*. New oil pump? What would that run, I know its a huge pain to do. Maybe it just needs to be torqued.

Any input would be great!

Oil pump rarely goes bad. Not likely the problem.

This car was on craigslist a few months back. The rust issue was troubling me, not to mention if the car had been driven much with the low oil pressure.

i agree... how long was it on craigslist and for how much?

I should probably walk away, but for under 2grand just seems like a good deal.

New oil pump is over $600.

Oil pressure problems are mostly caused by OPRV, worn crankshaft bearings and oil pressure sensor problems.

What you mean with "play with"? Can you do bodywork, engine rebuild and painting yourself? For me it sounds like $5000 or more.

well I could do some body work, but the majority I would have to outsource to a bodyshop. As far as an engine rebuild, no. But fixing problems here and there I could definately do.

I should probably keep looking. I dont want to get in over my head...

It was on craigslist for at least a month I think. I had him send me some pics eventually as there were not many photos on the listing. I did most of the research like you have to see if it was the oil pump or the OPRV or something else. If you knew exactly what was wrong that would be one thing, but the fact it could be anyone of several and you may be left footing the bill to see what is what and still possibly have an engine that needs rebuilding. I think he was asking $3k and eventually lowered the price to about $2500. It would be nice if it was just the oil pressure sender but most of the places I read, said it would read higher when it was faulty rather than reading low. Good luck.

thanks for the info! I might just bid on it to see how that pans out. I mean hell if I get it for a grand and pump 2-5 grand into it to get it nice that wouldnt be too awful bad I guess. I could just buy a decent one for 6, but where is the fun in that?!?! :P

I would assume it would be the bearings and judging by the condition of the car, let's assume the motor is junk for the sake of purchasing it.

Used shortblock= $1k
Body work and paint = $3.5k on the lighter side
interior improvement and bling= $500
Preventive maintenance= $1.5k
Cost of car BIN = $2k
Shipping = $750

Total of car not including evil Porsche surprises....$9250

I would keep looking....or part it!

if you're a home mechanic, then it could be worth it.

i did all the engine work on my car with help of friends. the labor cost for doing headgasket job and rod bearing job would have been astronomical. good thing i only bought my car for $800 heh. so far i'm about $4000 in
