Anybody rotate their 944 tachometer 90 degrees to give it that 911 racing gauge look? I am planning to replace my odo gear this summer, so this can be part of the project if it works. Just curious.

Thx!

I've seen it done on an early dash and it looked ok. But i think it would look totally wrong in a late dash.

I like this for racing alot since I can easily spot redline on the car at nearly any steering wheel position where I might need to shift. The smaller steering can high the tach in the stock position.

I am not certain it would work well on the 85.5 late dash. I am not even sure you can move it .

You'll have to use aftermarket gauges.

Or... You could be the first to swap an early dash into a late car.

+1. I am a proponent of the early guage cluster. It looks racier and more period correct.

... and I've rotated my tach and speedo too. Just cause I'm a poser.

I think it looks a bit stupid... But thats me. It would take a bit of work to rotate it in a late dash anyway.

It is of marginal usefullness in a street car. In early dash car the most I would so it move to the center. With two main gauges in a late car there is no center. So why move it.

For a race car I think it is extremely useful as the most important gauge I watch is the Tach. In neve watch the speedo only the tach. So having it in the middle is nice, but with "6" up it is easy to hit the right shift point since your eye need only move a little bit from the glass to the top of the center pod to verify a 6000 RPM or 6200 RPM shift point.

I agree, is not useful on streetcar. I just had a thought yesterday and do not recall ever seeing it done on a late car. It got some discussion going

In an early street it's useful because the relevant rpm (from about 0 to 3500) is obscured by the steering wheel, and I couldn't pull enough speedo cable to move the speedo gauge to the right side.

I will move the tach to the center to pretend I am behind the wheel of a underpowered 911 but as for rotating the tach I'll have to pass. On second thought after a few beers I might.

I'm happy with the stock gauge arrangement and orientation. I'd like to try putting the tach in the middle but I couldn't pull enough speedo cable either.

In a late dash, it would look super retarded to rotate the tach. In an early 944 it looks OK to rotate it because the numbers/dashes are already in a goofy orientation to begin with.

Reviving an old thread... I was intrigued by the challenge of rotating the tachometer 90 degrees in a late oval dash... I've not seen it done. The answer is that it can be done but it is pretty fiddly and requires making up a fairly precise conversion template bracket and a bit of intricate surgery of the frame that holds the tacho... It will need extension of the stock tacho wiring which is the next task and then I will see if it works .

My personal preference would be to print up a new face with the numbers realigned to maintain a more stock look. The fact that the at rest orientation of the tacho needle matches the ammeter and fuel tank is a pleasing coincidence.
