Default Black phone dials?

Hi all, 1st post.

I'm purchasing a silver 86 944 and it has the phone dial wheels. I used to have a 951 years ago with the fuchs and I like them much better. The current owner says he likes the black phone dials but I have never seen any, is this common? I would paint them but I would like to see what they look like first so if anyone has pics of black phone dials please post them or a link.

I've also got the hairbrained idea of possibly just painting the centers black al-la fuch style, anyone think that would look good or just silly?

Black phone dials are cool on certain cars. As long as they are painted well I think they will look good on a silver car.

That looks gorgeous, but where on your thread do you cover the polishing part? I did a polish job on the lip of 4 wheels (much less polished area than you are showing), and it was a g'damn nightmare. It took HOURS. I can't imagine how much time it took to do the lips on your phone dials.

It took me a long time but I was in no rush, on page two I summerize the steps.

Rougly I started with 120 Grit, they were very damaged
Then I went up in grit 400, then 1000, then 1400, always using WD40
Cleaned really good reguraly with varsol or paint thiner.
Taped the lip by following an imaginary line, I tried to make it as straight as possible.
Dupli-Color paint prep
Dupli-Color Flat Black <- 2 coats
Dupli-Color Clear Coat <- 2 coats

To get that final shine on the lip I used aluminium polishing compound.

they look ok but i feel that you lose some of the definition on the wheels when you go black. Gunmetal gray or bronze may be a good choice as well, and you'll still be able to see the shape of the wheel.

That said, I really dig the black ones with the polished lips. They look pretty good

I wonder how black/gray with a red lip would look?

I just did this combo on my cookies. I will post pics next time I get up to the desert if no one posts them before then. I got too lazy to refinish the lips and used a license plate to spray the centers. FWIW, I used high heat engine enamel paint and they look pretty good.
