1986 Turbo, 944 ,looking @
I am looking @ a turbo with a few problems.
It appears the heat is stuck on, AC does not work. Is this an expensive repair?
The front seats are shot, i am thinking of having them re skinned. The rear seat have cloth centers. I will need to find a rear unit from a scrap car that has leather on the entire rear seating section. (or fake leather)
What years fit the 1986 Porsche. I would assume they are a dime a dozen at the scrap yards.
The car has many little problems, but it looks like i can fetch it for a good price.
The timing belt will need replaced and front rotors soon.
The paint will need to be cleaned up, buffed out...
It has a few small dents, but all in all it looks good.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks jpc

heat stuck on is a simple small clip on the blend door. A/C systems were a little problematic on these cars. Timing belts are a decent job and should be done at the proper intervals rotors aren't too badly priced and rennbay sells seat recover kits.

AC is problematic, you mean with it holding a charge?
Does anybody have a schematic of the clip for the heater issue.
thanks for the help and offers

search heater clip it's on the drivers side under the dash about where your knee is the rod will be off. The A/C systems leaked some and the compressors weren't the best new updated ones are available these days however. 86 was the first year turbo car and the first year for what is considered late interior. In 87 the offset of the wheels changed as well as some of the suspension components hence the change in offset. 86 seems to be the lightest weight wise due to no abs or airbags etc. I have an 86 turbo myself. There are a few 944 guys in indy, I'm about an hour from there myself. sam grant on here is from indy and he has an absolutely stunning turbo.

So is the offsets on the early 86 more like a 911?
Ok, the rod, my mechanic guessed it would be the rod, i was confused when some said a clip. He also said it could be the control unit, which cost upwards of $600 bucks.
I will do the search, when the car is in my hands. I am still debating on the car before purchase. The $$$ start adding up on these cars quickly!
It would need the following
good wash and buff
new fake leather seat covers and rear seat to match (or a good used black set) it has the half leather / cloth
new carpet
shift boot
console door (leather is bad)
timiing belt
some type of fan sensor, mechanic said it would need it ASAP.
tires
some day, front rotors and motor mounts.
rod for heater.
OD is not working, but MPH is. Car has 86k miles. I am going to car fax it soon.
The car is fast, 90-91 in quarter mile. Mechanic said it had been chipped or the MPH was off.
One more question if i may.
I will need a new exhaust and more than likely new exhaust lines.
Can anyone tell me what type of flow master exhaust i would need?

Do you turn your own wrenches? Without a history on the car I would replace the water pump along with doing the belts as soon as I got the car. The risks of a belt failure are catastrophic.
Odo not working is a $40 nylon gear from Rennbay. You don't need a rod for the heater, it is a $10 nylon clip on the end of the rod. To check to see if this is the problem and the A/C works, reach under the dash and locate the rod (it'll be on the right of the steering wheel and should be just hanging down if actually broken). Push the rod toward the front of the car and brace it against something to hold it in place. This will open the A/C side of the door and you can see if the A/C is blowing cold.
The offset on the 86 is early: 23.3mm. From 87 on it uses the later offset of around 52mm IIRC. Mine's an 86 so I don't remember the late offset perfectly.
Parts on these cars are not really a dime a dozen as there aren't a whole lot of them. They not ridiculous though. GL!

dime a dozen, i meant the rear seats.
Yeah i know the repair bills can add up quickly. It some cases, it could surpass the value of the car. Maybe not a turbo, but standard 944 bills could.
Can i turn my own wrench, yes but i would not do this on a timing belt. If i purchase this car, i have left plenty of room for repairs from myself and mechanic.
I plan to redo the seats, and carpet myself. Well at least the carpet kit install and seat install. Not sure if i'll try swapping seats skins myself.
The car has no history, so the purchase price will reflect it.
My mechanic knows these cars.
said you can count on the following.
50k miles on a clutch
30-40k miles on brakes
timing belt, i think around 30k miles and possilby the water pump as-well.
thanks for the info.
PS this is not my first Porsche, actual it will be my 7th one.
1989 avn 911, 1988 911, 1989 944 std., 1968 912, 964 RSA, 1976 911S and soon to be a 944 turbo

It doesn't sound too bad. If you pull the trigger on the thing you might want to get to Hershey for the seats and stuff like that. I think the rest is pretty well covered.

Lots of good things have been mentioned here. I would also suggest taking a look at this link (http://www.clarks-garage.com/purchase.htm) for some very good general information.
If you are located in Indianapolis, I can help you with some of the parts if you are considering purchasing used as I am parting out an 86 turbo with a black interior. Good luck on the purchase! I think I might know the car your talking about.
