Default right rear area noise

Hi I bought the 1987 944 NA car in Nov and did all the belts, rollers, water pump, front seals as I did not know when that was last done. Motor runs smooth and strong. When I drove the car for the 2 1/2 hours ride home in Nov I noticed a noise from the right rear area. The noise is loud and does not seam to change if I turn a corner left or right . I had the car on jack stands and spone the tire and it seam very smooth no bearing play and there is not clicking noise from the CV joint. I'm wondering if the CV joint might need to just be re packed with lubed or replace the bearing . Thanks Look forward to your replies.

What does the noise sound like? If you say it's not the CV clicking, then the other typical culprits are the wheel bearing or the tire. Are the tires mismatched? You already tried tugging on the tire to check play in the bearings?

The wheel bearing on the late 944 is simple to change. You'll need either a slide hammer, or a tool like this one which worked well for me:

Well I took it for another spin and there is no clicking. The noise does seem to increase in volume as I go faster but does not make any differance if I turn left or right. What does it sound like if torque tube bearing go ?? Thanks

Well I don't really get the noise that I notice in reverse as I only back out and don't drive it around. I did have it out for a spin yesterday and it sounds, I think a bearing and will replace it and go from there not knowing much about the history it wound'nt hurt. The car has 236,230 miles on it . Maybe the stock bearings in there ?

Bearings will probably not last for 236k miles so if you think they're original, that's probably the problem. Jack up the car and push the wheel around to check for play. You can try pushing in/out on the top/bottom, and it shouldn't move at all.

TT bearings will be connected to the engine. It's very easy to diagnose. With car parked, engine on, in neutral, clutch up - rev the engine, see if you hear the bearings grumbling/chattering... and then rev it with the clutch pedal down. If it sounds much quieter with the clutch down, that means the TT bearings are the source of the noise.

make sure you don't have a caliper dragging also. Never hurts R and R the brakes on any new purchase. Also drop the half shaft and repack CV . remove and clean your CV joints and inspect. If they are bad replace them , if thay are good repack them . It is NEVER bad prevantitive maintanance to do this stuff.

Had the noise when I picked up the car and drove it about 260kms. I did a brake service. Brakes work very well new rotors and pads and no dragging .When I had it on jack stands all the wheels spin nice, prehaps only when weight of car on wheels does it make noise will check it on jack stands running it and stethoscope will let you all know how I make out . Thanks

Well I put it on jack stands and the tires are the culprit . The tires moving all over the place, not running true and I just had them balanced and I asked how they spone on the balancer . It does have a bit of a shake at higher speeds and that is what I think it is will keep you posted.
