Default Who wants their steering intermediate shafts rebuilt?

I may have a lead on the needle bearings used on the steering intermediate shaft u-joints. This would give me the ability to rebuild both manual and power shafts.

Anyone interested in that?

If I can make the deal for the bearings happen, it might end up costing about $60 per shaft ($20 for the bearings, $40 for my time).

What thinks the rennlist collective? Cheaper than a $1k steering shaft from porsche?

That sounds fair. I would expect there is a market for it, especially among racers.

Sounds interesting but new ones look like they are $126 from Pelican Parts or am I not understanding which part this is? $60 for a rebuild would still be a deal.

Good find, Greg.

I guess this is really only cost effective for the 924 shaft ($320) and the manual steering shaft (unobtanium!)

From Pelican:

Steering Shaft, 924S/944/968 All (1983-95), Each
Brand: Genuine Porsche
$126.00

477-419-951-F-OEM
Steering Shaft, 924/Turbo (1977-82), Each
Brand: Genuine Porsche
$320.00

944-347-027-01-OEM
Steering Shaft, 944 (1983), Each

I have a manual intermediate shaft that I have to lube to keep it running smoothly, I would definitely be interested in having it rebuilt.

Although I do not regularly lube my shaft I would be interested to know if this would return some crispness to the steering by removing slop in the u-joints?

$60 is still < 1/2 of the Pelican price so it might make sense for 944's with power steering anyway. It would be interesting to compare a new one vs a rebuilt one to see which is tighter.

Edit: Considering how much I HATE getting that thing on and off the PS rack, I'm not likely to be the guinea pig...

I might be interested in this. My manual intermediate shaft has a bit of play. But the timing is rotten. I wanted to get the car back on the road soon. What do you think your turnaround time would be?

Van, the part is now "not available" from Porsche. Did you ever rebuild one and how did it turn out?

That is a steal on custom machine work. I would image he would drill and tap the U-joint bosses for set screws that could be lock-tited and allow for multiple rebuilds. That's the way I'm going to do mine when they start heading south.

Definitely put me on the "hell yeah" list.

That is, if I can find my old worn out manual shaft in the parts cave.

Guys, I never went down this route... Specifically, because, do do it right, the bearing holes in the u-joints would need to be reamed out, and once the new bearing was in, the metal would have to be "staked" so they don't come out. That would require a bit of tooling and maybe some trial and error.

instead, I did this: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...to-manual.html

Hey Van, do you have a U-joint part # for the replacements?
I have a spare shaft that I'm going to mod and will make an adapter puck so the shaft can be used for the Power rack and the manual rack as well as for X-member drop for the V8 install. If you have to drop Allen's rack for his swap you'll need to extend the shaft 1"
