What year did they become avaiable and were they standard or just an option (besides Turbo S)?
Weren't 944's the first car's to ever offer them (as well as 928's)?
Also- Porsche never offered driver air bags w/out passenger ones did they? I always thought that was cool- I think it's kind of silly to have a driver AB w/out passenger- seems like it should be the other way around if you were going to have one OR the other, since the passenger seat is the "death seat." I think Porsche was pretty smart to not offer a driver-only one, (assuming I'm correct)....
Thanks,
Robby

yea i think 87 was the first year it was an option and 88 was the first year it was standard (on all 944 models)
and i think dual was the only way to go
ive got em.. and personally.. i really like the airbag wheel a LOT more than the non-airbag wheel.. its almost the whole reason i wanted an 88
heh.

That's cool- exactly what I was thinking...
Simon- I know what you mean about the stock steering wheels- I kind of like the AB one better too, but I personally don't like air bags at all. I just think Porsche made a good move giving both driver AND passenger bags since they were adding them to begin with- other car's only had driver bags for a long time- doesn't make sense to me...
I've now got a Momo Competition steering wheel in my Turbo S. I have to say that I LOVE the feel of the Momo- it's got a slightly fatter grip and the smaller diameter (350mm vs 380mm) makes the steering feel heavier which I like. Makes me wish I could go even smaller, but I think it would probably look silly. I've heard of people using 320's, which might squeeze by, but I've never seen pics or anything- I doubt anything smaller would look right. I almost want to go manual if I could get a manual rack, but I'm not sure I'd like it- I wish I could make it just a little less assisted. Anyway, I just mentioned the Momo b/c it's one of the best thing's I've done to my car- I couldn't believe how much better it made the car feel. You might want to check one out if you can do w/out the air bags- the 968 CS wheel is a beautiful one too BTW- I'm sure you've seen the thread about the group order(?)- anyone know what the size of the 968 CS is? It LOOKS a little smaller than the 951 wheels, but I can't tell from pics....

My '88 na didn't have 'em, either. So it looks like they weren't standard before '89 at the earliest.
Jim, now there was this one gal I dated for a while who could have been a passenger's side air bag... "Will you just _shut up_ for a minute?"

It was 1987 when they first were available. My 87 944 NA has the airbag cable leading into the engine compartment...but I don't have the air bag option. Apparently the cable was always installed at the factory regardless.
The only reason I know this is during an oil change I was fooling around under the hood with this weird looking cable...couldn't for the life of me figure out what this thing could be and my wrench said... "Hey, be careful with that thing..you could set off your air bags!" He'd be the one to know...he's been working on P cars forever.

My '88 944S has dual airbags - My understanding is that they were optional on the S in '88, then became standard on the S2, but were never available on a regular NA. They were standard on turbos starting in '87.
