Replaced my CV joints...
I intended to simply swap my axles from side to side, but after pulling them I couldn't resist cleaning the CV joints to gauge their condition. I'm glad I did as two of them were trashed. The other two were showing signs of wear, so I repalced all 4.
The Haynes manual (which I've decided is good for torque specs and kindling) says to 'slide the cv joint' onto the axle. Uh, no. It must be pressed on. It's kind of hard to buy a press at 10 pm with no car (wife was out of town), so I had to resort to using a large sledge hammer, wood, and the center of an old CV joint. It got the job done, but man I wish I would have bought a shop press before hand. @#%#@$%$#% Haynes manual is a piece of $%$#@%.
Point being buy a shop press or take them somewhere to have them pressed on, and avoid extra work for yourself.

In most cases it is cheaper (or very near the same cost) to replace the whole axel than go through the CV joint change hassle.
I just replaced both rear axels in my car for $330 by doing the work myself. 1 CV joint was going to cost me a little over $80 so I decided to do all 4 the easier way and not worry about them for a long time.

Here are some pics from the job.

Finished axles, the big hammer I used (check out all the dents in the wood...that sucked):

I agree with your opinion about Haynes manual!

944 Play- It's Natty LIGHT, thank you! I throw back so many brews when wrenching that I opt for the cheap stuff. After work or with dinner I spring for pale ales.
Olli- Long story...My gear puller would not stay put on the inner CV joint piece. It would pull the entire assembled joint off no problem, but this puts a lot of stress on the bearing cage. In this case I assembled the axles and then realized that I had left a washer off on one end (so the CV joint had to come back off...). Well I couldn't get it off w/o pulling from the outside, and I ended up cracking a bearing cage. So back to square one. The apparatus shown allowed me to pull the inner half of the CV joint, and then I used a bearing cage from one of the old CV joints for reassembly.
OC Porsche- I used to be an engineer at Stanley Tools. Free tape measures so yeah I stocked up!

Thanks for posting your experience and the photos. I'm about to undertake that job myself. If everything looks decent, I'll swap them side to side; if it looks like a bomb went off in there, I'll buy the complete axles from Paragon for $170 a side.
