Holy CRAP! Thanks for pointing this one out Sean! That's MY exact car, cept it has an automatic! Special edition plaid seats (not "Porsche cloth")! And I bet it's Zermatt silver. Those seats only came with the Zermatt SE package. The other SE color was a metalic black w/beige plaid. Wow. I may contact the second highest bidder and offer up my car...!?

I do like that mine is unusual (only 250 SE's made in Silver), but I would also like more if it had leather, airbags, and was faster!
If I planned on collecting 944's, I would hold onto mine. But I just want a fun driver!

I bet in 10 years, my car would be worth a lot more than an average S2...maybe.

I bet in ten years your 944 and my S2 will be just plain old cars. Take a look at mid 70's 911s.

You saw what i put into my car. i bought it with 56k. fact is these cars need about 4k every 60k.

Im pretty firm at 13.5 for my car (with both sets of wheels), mainly because I put 8k into it in the last two years/15k miles.

If you buy an S2 without the work i put into mine for 9k, you will pass the 13k mark before you know it, and have a car with more miles than mine. the shocks alone are 750, brake lines 100 etc.

drive your car, the hell with the color, just enjoy it.

my wife told me yesterday that she doesnt want me to sell any of my cars, but of course it's my decision. with yours and my new additions, i would recommend something sporty but not exactly a porsche if replacing the 944. as hard as it is to believe, there is life beyond this board!

Tom-
You did put a ton of money into your car. Was it because you bought it with a ton of maintainance due all at once? I've had my car a year, and although I haven't put a lot of miles on her, I only put in about $2k, $1200 being the necessary belts/rollers, etc, and the rest cosmetic, but not necessary.

You are right for "moving on", if you feel you must. I already have a Taurus, for the "family", so any sporty car I own will be a fun car for ME to drive, since it will probably be driven only by me, and not that often! Hence the thought of buying the best 944 I can right now, so that if it becomes a garage queen, at least it will be a car worth keeping for 5 years due to the more solid options of a later car, ie:ABS/Airbags/Leather/Brembo's, etc. And my car WILL be needing at least a new clutch in 10k miles or so. So if I find an S2 maintained like yours, for under 10k, I can't see having to put WAY more than $2k into it in the near term.

BTW, there ain't too many 944/S2 out there with automatic transmission, is there?

And how about 951?
Never seen one with auto.
Was it even an option?

Andy,

The family car here is the aurora.

About getting an S2 with low miles for under 10k, here goes.

I bought the car with 56k, and it was about as clean as clean can be. dealer maintained, up to date. it theoretically didnt need anything.

The clutch was put in three days after I bought the car (plenty of meat on the clutch, rubber rotted). the belts the day before, and the rollers a few months later. the H4 headlights were right after i bought the car for safety.

in the first year i converted the ac to r134. so for the first year it was pretty cheap to keep up.

the big money was in 2002. i treated myself to the new radio and speakers (500), then i bought the wheels & tires. I then put the brakes/ss lines in. then i rubbed, so i put the shocks in. then came the alternator, ball joints, and clutch master slave.

what i concluded is that every 60-70k these cars are gonna need shocks (750) clutch (1200) rollers/belts (1200) alternator/ball joints (500). thats 3-4k right there.

look for those things when you look for an S2.

I have a line on a 97 bmw 328 convertible. if i sell the rx7 convertible, and S2 i can buy the 328, throw the baby seat in the back, and family trips.

I think it also depends on how many miles a year you put on the car. At the rate I am going, it would take 10 years to put on 70k miles! So, if I get a car with a new clutch, that should do it for the life of the car (as long as I have it anyway)! The ball joints and shocks can be the same interval, if the car is only driven mildly at under 7k miles a year...my car still has the stock clutch and shocks at 91k!

So, I think getting a car at the right interval is key! AFTER a 70k mile service, etc.

The 328 is a sweet ride...very stiff, and fun. Not as sexy as a Porsche though...but way more practical where a car seat is needed. What color is the one you are looking at?? I am partial to their platinum grey color!

Andy, glad to be of help. When I saw that 944 on eBay, I immediately thought of your car.

Recently when recovering seats in the 944, I referred to a photo of your 'special edition' cloth interior.

If you DO decide to sell your car, I bet you can make money on it! It will be interesting to see if this eBay auction tops $10 grand.

Sean...this ebay car doesn't even claim to be a special edition. I guess the photos show how clean it may be, so people are into it!

I have the original Special Edition brochure, explaining the limited number of cars made, and what "extras" the cars came standard with. If the ebay car gets 10G's, I hope I can too!! I have about $9k into the car to date...geting all my money back would be sweet (should I decide to sell)~!

Andy,
the key is getting one just after the 70k service. i think you will have a hard/near impossible time finding a very S2 with the 70k service for under 12k.

the 328 is midnight blue with a dark tan interior. if it wasn't jills first choice in color, i wouldnt be hot for the car.

with 9k into the car, if you loose 1-2k you are still way ahead of me.

Tom--Sweet color for the BMW! The latest crop of Porsches have a dark-dark metalic blue...very sweet, specially with dark tan leather!

If I wanted red, I would definately be interested in your S2. I never liked red though for some reason.

I may just keep my car if buying a new one means getting a time-bomb with unknown maintainance dangers lurking! I'll have to really think about it.

"time-bomb" is the key.

isnt there a saying about keeping the devil you know instead of the devil you dont?

for the amount you are driving the car, you wont notice the difference enough. even if you autocross, you will be against 944s, not turbos or s2s.

i think i like my brothers 84 more than mine because i dont get enough opportunities to use the extra power. i dont think you will get enough of those opportunities either.

I see what you mean. A good part of my love of the car is just HAVING it to play with! I just figure having a newer car with more of the options I like would make it more fun to own.

When I drive my NA, I DO notice the lack of punch getting onto the highway, something an S2 will help (well, a little anyway)!

Andy:
Don't forget about the cam chain guide/tensioner that needs to be replaced on an S2 at around 100k miles. So, while the 70k service may have been done, you may be looking at the cam chain guide/tensioner R&R on a car between 75k and 110k miles.

Regarding maintenance costs: that really depends not only on mileage, but what kind of mileage you put on the car! If you autocross and DE the car, you're going to put more $$ in maintaining the car than if it's just a daily driver, or driven occasionally. Stuff like wheel bearings, CV joints, other suspension components, and engine components will wear faster on track driven cars, and on road driven ones. That shouldn't be surprising: how many times do you drive at a constant 6,000rpms on the street? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

As a point of reference, next time there's a get-together (Rennlist or PCA), we'll take my car for a spin: you will notice a significantly different powerband: lots of torque down low makes for a lot of fun, especially coming out of corners! woo! woo!
