Cup Holder
I have a question for the people of the board...I have a 84 944 and I like most people enjoy a good cup of coffee on the way to work but my problem is there are no cup holders in my car and setting the cup on my console it works ok but if you forget its there when you turn it spills on the floor. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> Does anyone know of a cup holder that can be used in the 84 944 any feedback would be great. <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />
Thanks,
J

If you're driving correctly, you shouldn't have the ability to drink a coffee... <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />
Hehe! j/k
No, really, get yourself a GOOD travel mug that won't spill... Then get an add-on 'flip-type' cup holder from your dealer.. If they don't have 'em, the Mercedes shop will.. Very cool, and fit almost anywhere.. But do get a good mug...

I found a killer cup holder at Pep Boys. Black plastic and aluminum, it looks very stylish. Total cost $4.75.
It mounts securely to the a/c vent (I use the center passenger vent), it is very light weight, and almost looks factory. It has a hinged piece to fit a variety of containers.
I have had everything from a can of Coke to a giant Carl's Jr. cup in the holder, and it never spills.

Three Wheelin'
You might try one of those lighter socket suckers.
I'd probably go with just getting a good travel mug. In a pinch, I've been known to stick sodees between my passenger seat and the seat belt buckle. It's not something I'm proud of, but...neither are cupholders.

There is a company that makes a cupholder specifically for our cars (at least 85.5+).<a href="http://66.40.79.63/cgi-bin/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=thispage&thispage=models.html&ORDER_ID=219158930" target="_blank">Their webpage.</a>

The best cup holder's I've ever had have been cute little female co-pilots- the hotter the girl the better the cup holder! Unfortunately, there are NEVER enough of them...
As for the Java Grips: Has anyone out there ever seen and/or used them? I don't think they look THAT great, but they're about the best I've seen for our cars so far- too bad they're almost $50!
I've always liked the cup holders that are built in to something like a center console that you can close and hide, like those in some of the newer Mercede's like C230's. I don't like the type that hang on the door by the window switch, etc...
I've always wanted to find someone who woks w/carbon fibre to make some that would go into the glove box, like the stock 944 cup holders, but were deeper- it would be SOOO EASSY for someone who was good w/the stuff- you'd just have to make a panel that was shaped IDENTICALLY to the original (and a different mold for the turbo's since they are differently shaped). The mounting screws could be down low, so they would be flush w/the bottom, and then, the whole thing would raise up about 1" high, and you could have two (maybe more if you wanted?) really nice holders. The depth wouldn't be a problem, since the door would close and it would go back into the really deep glove box. Does that make sense? Anyone good w/CF want to try it???

Have ya done a search on this subject, seems we have covered it before. Although I hadn't seen the Java Grips before, I'm not about to spend $44+ on one.
Anyway, I got one of the regular plastic ones that is designed with a flap that inserts into the window sill. And I fold the flap over, and tuck it up on the passenger side between the carpet and center console. Its actually pretty stable.

Guys... Performance Products make a drink holder that looked good in their catelog (p. 84) that I thought I'd get it. $39.95 and it is covered with real leather. It is a door mounted flip down type, so it is somewhat unobtrusive to the driver (I say "somewhat" because if you have long circus clown legs then you will likely bump it with your knee when you use it). You do have to resign yourself to screw mounting it into the interior door panel (Ugh!). It is adjustable to fit the size of the drink container too.
It feels very sturdy and when flipped down you can see it has a thick cork base to set the drink container on. I'm due to mount mine soon.

Sounds good. I'll check it out. You don't happen to have a picture of it that you can post, do you?
I bought a small square flip-down type (from Wal-mart), but haven't installed it yet. I really don't want to screw it into the console anywhere, so that's why your suggestion above sounds like a nice alternative.
Thanks.

Here's my preference...
I use one of those "beanbag" cup holders and have it placed in the passenger footwell. It sits on the folded up windshield protector, you know the springy kind that folds into a circle. If there are any drips they get caught by that. Works for me as I don't usually have any passengers.

Someone needs to tell Java Grip their 968 one won't work for the 968 due to the placement of the face clock. My guess is if you moved it over the stick would get in the way.

I built a center console for my '84 from plywood, covered with proper padding and matching vinyl. Not difficult. It has a hinged top and when opened (hinge side on the passenger side) the plywood bottom has a cup sized cutout. The only problem is I keep a small fire extinguisher in there so I have to temporarily relocate that to another place (sigh). BTW; the console is perfect for resting one's elbow during the more boring parts of a journey (like 100 miles on an interstate for example). It simply slides between the seats so it is removable for more spirited driving.
Works for me!!!

I have the Java Grip cupholder in my 1986 944. In my opinion it's worth every penny. Over the past year I had an early morning 80-minute commute to work, and I needed the coffee. It's worth the $50 to not have to worry about spilling something on my lap or in my car.
On a previous discussion someone mentioned that it didn't look like much for $50, and he could make one like it himself. My answer was that it fits perfectly, looks good, and I couldn't make one of my own for that money since I don't have the tools. The Java Grip holder probably has only about $2.00 worth of materials in it, but it would probably take me a couple of hours to make one myself (by the time you factor in taking measurements, buying the materials, assembly, etc.) even if I had the proper tools. A couple of hours of my time is worth $48.
Unlike the one sold by Performance Products, this one requires no screws. It simply fits securely in the cubby under the radio. If you want to take it out, just take it out.
With regards to the idea that you shouldn't drink while driving, give me a break. Sure, if you're doing something on the track or out with the intention of driving hard, then don't take a drink with you. If you're driving to work and want a cup of coffee, then go for it. Likewise, if you're on a road trip and want a Coke. When you're going around a corner or driving in traffic, then leave the drink in the cupholder! When you're at a stop light or crusing on the highway, then drink up!
It is annoying that they don't know what a 968 dash looks like. I'm also not sure that the Java Grip holder will fit in "J"s 84 944. The Java Grip web page says 85.5 and on. I can't recall if the pre-85.5 dash has a cubby the same size as the later cars.
