Post 1990 944 S2 Cab WHAT IS IT WORTH.

I am looking at a 1990 944 S2 Cab Red with Black Leather and black Top. The car has 49,000 miles and is in extremely good condition. All original, new clutch 45,000 miles, timing belt and 50,000 mile service has been done. What is the value of this car?

Please help!

Offer the guy ten bucks because these are simply the most gawd awefull, terrible pieces of junk ever produced. If that doesn't work, $13-15k sounds fair.

He is asking $17,500. I think he is a little high even though the car is very nice.

Rod,
I have a 1991 S2 Cabriolet. I have to disagree with your assessment that the guy is asking too much. If the car is truly in excellent condition, with that low mileage he is about right. One of the big things to look into was h20 pump replacement. The clutch being done is worth $1000-$1500 depending on your location and who did the work. If the top is in good condition (no rips, tears, & clear back window) $17.5k is NOT ridiculous. However, if the top hasn't been replaced and the car wasn't garaged its entire life, you will end up replacing that top within a year to two. Top replacement runs anywhere between $1100-$1600 depending on who does the work and what material you choose.
What are the options on the car? I am assuming that it has a clean title and has never been wrecked. The latest Market Update in Excellence magazine puts the prices in this range:

Poor condition - $11038
Good condition - $12550
Exc. condition - $16800

So, does $17.5k still sound too high? If you are serious about the car then have a Prepurchase Inspection done. This will typically uncover any "hidden" costs that you can use to bargain with. On the cabriolets the condition of the TOP is one of the single strongest bargaining points. Normal top life is only 5-7 years UNLESS the car is almost always garaged. Exposure to the elements for 12 years (regardless of mileage) will require top replacement sooner than you might think. The mileage is extremely low for a 944 series cars. 944's typically have much higher mileage than, say a 911 of the same vintage. 944's get driven. However, the 1990-1991 944's (espcially the cabriolets) were very expensive so they usually have much lower mileage than many of the other 944 variants. Average yearly mileage for a 911 is 6-9k. 944's tend to lean toward the national average of 12-15k/year. So, the 1990 S2 cab you're looking at have very low mileage. I need more info if you want more help on pricing. Good luck.

MadMax,

I drove the car today and it drives great. Top down you can have a conversation at 60 miles per hour and speak in a normal tone. The wind noise is reasonable for a convertible. The car is smooth, its has no vibration all the way to about 80 miles per hour. The engine bay is immaculate and the paint has very few road chips on the front. The current owner has put 30,000 miles on the car over the last nine years.

The interior is clean, but I did notice a few things. The Black piping on the Black leather seats on the passenger side was wavey and did not hold a straight line across the front of the seat as you would expect. I don't know if this is common or not? It didn't look like the seats had been worked on. Also, the shifter boot was torn (2 sq. in.) around the top near the gear diagram. Other than that, no dash cracks and everything works.

The top was replaced about 7 or 8 years ago, but it looks to be in great shape. There is no fading or indication of dry rought and the back glass is clear.

Over all, the exterior is probably a 9.5 or 10 and the interior is more like a 8.5 out of 10.

Thanks for you insight.

Rod,
No matter how good the car looks and drives I would still strongly recommend a Pre-purchase inspection from a reputable Porsche mechanic or your local Porsche dealership. Most places charge no more than $200 for an extremely thorough inspection. For $200 they will look at almost everything. At least that Brumos Porsche used to charge. Shift boot wear is normal.

As for the top I would look closely at the threads on the seams of the top. They fade before the top's material fades and will help give you a better indication of the top's overall condition. I know this because the top on my car looked pretty good, some cloudiness on the rear window but no tears. Well, not more than 3 months of ownership passed and it developed two rips in the top. The material had just had enough. If the top was replaced 7 or 8 years ago that means that a previous owner replaced the top at the 5 year point? That would be a little bit on the early side of the margin. That would mean that the current owner is the person that had the top replaced and should be able to produce documentation regarding that work. The top actually comes in 2 pieces. The large 'roof' section can be replaced separately from the rear 'window' section. It is possible that only one portion was replaced rather than the entire top. From your description is sounds like a very nice S2 Cab. I would still offer him at least $1.5k less than he is asking because there WILL be things that crop up after purchase that you can't forsee (if you don't have the PPI done).

Good luck.

Max
