Help! My car is haunted. Starter motor died friday, replaced with new starter this morning. Car started up fine took half hour drive. Came home parked car in driveway 2hours later starter motor is cranking away with no key in the ignition. Any ideas? Help.

Only thing that I can think of is the wires were connected wrong or maybe the starter is defected.

I would suspect either a defective starter solenoid or something in the ignition switch that is triggering the solenoid.

Jeez, don't park your car without taking the negative cable off until you figure out what is wrong.

Pulled the negative cable and will get under the car in the morning to see if the trigger has voltage running through it. My assumption is that if I disconnect the trigger wire and it still tries to crank when I reconnect the battery then it is the strater. If the trigger wire has juice running through it with out the ke turned then it is the ignition switch ?????? Was hoping someone else had this problem and have a simple fix or difinitive answer.

i just installed a new engine into my 951. i reconnected everything myself. when i was plugging in the battery the starter started going crazy. it took a second to figure out what it was... turns out the cable to the battery was aligned just so it touched the trigger wire. thus when the battery cable had juice, it turned itself on. solution was to loosen power cable on starter and turn the cable away from the trigger wire more. problem solved. i don't think this is exactly your problem, but lesson learned is check the contacts before replacing parts.

That is a good way to start the analysis. Only problem may be that this is intermittent and when you check the solenoid has retracted to off. Well, we know this is intermittent since you shut the car off only to come back with the starter cranking.

But you need to start somewhere.

Got under the ar this morning. Problem was the trigger wire. The cranking went from intermittent to constant, any time I connected the battery cables the starter would crank by itself. The insulation on the trigger wire was wearing out enough to cause the problem. As the current jumped across it make a bigger "hole" in the insulation causing the starter to continously run.

I re-routed the trigger wire so that it would not touch the cable to the battery. So far problem solved.

Had similar problem with my 968 and I sprayed contact cleaner in the ignition key and that fixed the problem.

vw rabbits would do this from a bad antenna seal)) shrink wrap and reroute the wires but I would follow ice sharks recommendation until you are sure the problem is resolved 100%
