Cool Aluminum Torque Tube now a Reality

Well guys, the aluminum torque tube is now finished. All up weight savings is over 30%. I'll post some pix soon after I finish polishing it up to bling-bling status.

I'm not familiar with the weight of the original torque tube assembly. How much weight savings are we talking about? Did you have to change the OD of the tube when you went to aluminum?

I'm trying to get pix posted this weekend. According to my scale, the stock unit weighs 67lbs, mine weighs just under 44lbs, more like 43.5. By the finger math that's a 34% reduction in weight. The OD is slightly larger at 3.5" v ~3.375" for the stock one. Material used is 6061T6 1/4 wall. Only steel remaining is the driveshaft, bearings, carrier bolts and safety wires.

Mark- pm me with what you have in mind. I'm specifying this as an "off road use only" part.

That was the plan, but I think that the value of this part will be lost on the average 944 guy, but not on the performance enthusiast. This part is designed to remove weight in the center of mass of the car and be easily rebuilt. There's no way that I'll ever quit my "real" job, but I hope it will benefit the marque at the track.
