930 question X-post
Forgive me my ignorance, but what is a 1980 930 worth? I found one with 89K km on it, all german gauges, modded for racing. Don't know anything else about it except that it belonged to a drug dealer and was confiscated by the sheriff (it pays to be a public defender <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ) Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Are all the slant nosed turbo, or can you get n/a versions? How much is each worth? What's maintenance like?
Forgive my ramblings

I think they are going for about $15,000 to $25,000 depending on condition/miles and some are slant nose because it was an option. Most of them look like 911's with fat fenders and usually the whale tail on back.

Michelle, given that it was owned by someone of the criminal persuasion, is it street legal? IIRC the turbo was not sold in the US from 1980 - 1985 for emissions reasons.
The turbo was re-introduced to the US in 1986 and I think the slant nose became an option around the same time.
It's nice to see a drug dealer with taste though..

Is it a euro model (german gauges would hint to that direction)? If yes, would you be able to drive it on street without cop/emissions/whatever problems?
If it's a factory original slant nose then the price could be more than what a normal 930 goes for; on the other hand, if it's modified from a normal car then it should cost less... (of course depending on how well the bodywork was done). Anybody know what the option code for slant nose was?? I couldn't find it... that would be the easiest way to verify if it's original or not.

Michelle,
A 1980 930 is a Euro car, only the 78/79s were sold by Porsche in the US. The factory began building the slopenose in europe in 1982 I believe and when the turbo was reintroduced into the US, it was a $28,000 option beginning in 1987.
Prior to Porsche offering the slopenose, other tuners back then produced the slopenose kits, some were fiberglass (you wouldn't want this one) and others were steel. The slopenose conversion is a complicated one, and with the factory setup, many of the parts being different from a regular one, so who knows what replacement parts would be easy to find.
The first thing I'd do would be to determine the overall condition of the car strictly as a turbo which I would estimate to be anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000 for that year depending on condition, mileage, etc. Then add about $5,000 for the slantnose if it is steel. If it is fiberglass, subtract $5,000 as it makes the car like a kit car and is difficult to find a buyer.
FWIW, I'd pay particular attention to the engine since they are time consuming and expensive to rebuild properly. Exhaust valves and guides, cylinders, and factory exhaust systems are known weak points in these cars, especially with one that is running higher than stock boost.
