Default Rebuilding CV joints

Man, were those little buggers dirty. Got one side cleaned up really nice. Gonna work on the other sides tomorrow. Here are some in progress pictures. I hope to have both joints cleaned and repacked by tomorrow and *hopefully* installed.

You know you are not 'rebuilding' these right? Repacking yes. For $89 for 2 new CV's, boots, and fully assembled on an axle it seems like you could better with new assemblies. There are already wear marks and minor galling on all 3 of your components, they aren't shot yet but new grease will at least extend their life. They are real fun to reassemble...but once you get the trick down they are a snap.

Okay, all points here are valid. But, I can flip them around 180 degrees since I have not got very fast in reverse, and get some more life out of them before I spend more money. Plus, my car is not torn down. These CVs are from a parts car that I bought, so my car is still driving. If they dont work out, hey, I got some experience working on my car. Oh, and as a plus, the boots are brand new. So, if anything else, I can salvage those.

Where you finding that? The CV's kit with boot is about $89ea plus the axle etc. Complete axles are $250-$300.

I stand corrected. The price has gone up from $89 to $130 in less than a week since i posted the same link. Try other large company like autozone. Most of them have lifetime warranty.

Please tell us that you put some scribe marks on the inner and outer races to make sure you put them back together facing the right way. I've done the CV teardown and repack. The description in the Haynes manual is pretty good for this. However, while both races may look symmetrical, the inner one (with the splines) is not. After you get the 6 BB inserted in their slots between the two races (that's the Rubic's cube step) you could find the joint is locking up rather than having smooth angular motion. If so, then you have to take it back apart, take the BB's out, and flip the inner race 180 degrees.
