265-35-18 and 265-40-17 are recommended for 9-10.5"

So, you might be able to make it fit, but it's not recommended.

265/40/18 is the wrong size for a 944. It's too big.
265/35/18 is a better size.
It's also recommended for 9-10.5" wheel.

The 235/40/18 should be ok. Although 225/40/18 are closer to stock size.

8.5 x 18?! You sure you don't mean 7.5"? The 8.5's only came on 996GT2's.

Also, as noted above, I concur, and use for my Winter Tires on Twists, 225/40 and 265/35. (235/40 works, as I have that on the front of my Summers. Though I kinda like the look of the 225/40 Side Profile)

235/40 - 265/40 are the sizes for a Cayman/Boxster(987), and not correct for our cars, however will work.
