What is the difference between early '44 and late '44?

Is it only the antenna?

The late 944 windshield is flushed with sill. Gives it a smoother profile.

So I can put a 968 windshield in my '87 944 and the only thing I have to worry about is getting the 968 antenna for the top of my car?

check if you have insurance coverage...also somewhere I read the series 1 and 2 and 968 are all the same size...series 2 is more expensive because of the antenna...later 944 models and the 968 cost more because the air-bag models are supposedly stronger

can anyone confirm?

Also, the 968 antenna is supposed to have much better reception. Though, I do prefer the looks of the 944 antenna.
