I'm really interested in this.

Is this the hole you're talking about? It looks to be about the right size/pitch for a seat belt bolt, and what's in there now is just a big plastic screw that doesn't do much of anything other than cover up that hole:

Yes that's the decorative plug screw that covers the hole used for ROW cars. If converting to 3-point rear seat belts I ythink the entire roller is needed from an earlier Euro car or a 89+ US S2 or 968.

Guys, keep in mind that the cargo side carpets will also have to be changed to an '87+ version, if you want to put the 3 point rear belts into an '86 or older. This, plus you will have to get the sheet metal parts welded into your cargo area to mount the retractors. The retraction mechanism is very touchy wrt the angle/attitude of it when mounted.

You can tell if your car has the metal supports in it by looking at the cargo area convenience light; if it's horizontal to the cargo deck, you don't have them.

Keith

Eric, we are close by. Let me know if you are serious about this - I have some leads as to where you might get this stuff.

To help clarify, if your car has these humps, then you should have the mounting brackets underneath for the stock reels. If not, then you could still go with an aftermarket system without the reel, mounted to the holes in the C-pillars. You could add the brackets for the stock reels, but I think it would be a royal PITA.

Sorry for stealing your picture, Keith. Nice car, by the way.

Default Seatbeltcity.com anyone ???

I'm reviving this thread in preparation of retrofitting 3 points in the rear seats of my 85.5.

Has anyone bought belt kits from here?

http://www.seatbeltcity.com/Seat_Belt_Selector

I am very tempted to buy a set of the 3 point retractable and some mounting brackets from them. My goal is to fit a car seat for my 3 yr old. I have modified the stock lap belts to accept my LATCH buckles but I can't get the straps tight enough and so I wanted the retractors to cinch the seat down tight. I also need to add in a D-ring in the rear hatch area as I can't seem to find a decent anchor point for the top strap

I will photo and document my mod in great detail since I have found a million threads on this with no solid method or pics of this process. There are bits and pieces all over the place but no comprehensive end to end descriptions. Wish me luck!

I just bought a kids harness for my 3yo in my daily drive. It's a 3 point belt, the same type I had as a kid I'm my dads 944 back in the 80s. It has 2 loops on the bottom that the lap belt goes through and a single top clip that attaches to an eye You install in the back hatch. Kids love their "racing" harness.

1988 was the first year in the US for a rear 3pt belt. If your car doesn't have airbags, you can transport them in the front seat. My boys love riding in the front seat of our 944. If you retrofit the 3pt belt, no point in doing it 1/2 assed. Seatbelts are exposed to incredible amounts of Gforce loading.. I'd hate to be the one who installed or created my "own" version only to have it injure my own child.

I removed the upper part of the rear seat. Got two bars installed across the car and fixated the children's seat on these bars. (Sorry, the two black bars a bit hard to see.)

Since a machine shop did the designing and machining, I do not know. But it was complicated.

Just above the children's seat you can see the nut (facing forward) holding the three-piece bar together.
