Post Clutch going fast!

I am hoping to get my clutch done next week, I've known it's on it's way out for a few weeks.
But...Yesterday, after the autox, I got in the car and the pedal seemed a lot stiffer than usual. By the time I got home, it wasn't as bad (but not quite normal). This morning it was stiff again, but as the car warmed up...(you see the pattern here?) Is this normal for a 944 clutch that's seen better days (not slipping on the street BTW), or is something else going on here? Think it'll last another week/200 miles? TIA

Strange, but when I lost my NA clutch it blew up in an instant. No signs of slipping, clunky operation or anything. All of a sudden I just couldn't shift gears and that's all there was...this happened a few years ago, learning to drive a car with a 944 clutch is an expensive deal.

I never had the stiff clutch pedal when mine went out in my 83. I had a hard time shifting because little pieces of rubber were running around the housing though.

And mine also blew up instantly shifting to 3rd on a highway...boom. No more clutch, it was completely shredded when it was taken out. Sorry for not being much help...but I just never had any change in pedal effort. Hope for you it is something less expensive. Good luck.

You know you don't need the clutch to shift

Dave,

I put a clutch in the 24S a year ago. What most are talking about is the break-down of the rubber center not a slipping clutch. When it goes chunks of rubber make almost impossible to disengage the clutch. Slipping is either caused by extreme wear or more likely a leaking rear main seal onto the clutch. Give me a call or e-mail me off the list and we can discuss the sorid details.

Dave,
It must be that massive stress you put on the clutch with that 60hp engine of yours!

Hope you can sort it all out! If you get stranded around Bergen / Passaic co. call me and I can give ya a lift.

When the clutch was replaced in my car the tech told me that he replaced it with a 930 clutch? Is that a rubber centered clutch? When mine went a spring fell out of it and wedged itself between the pressure plate and the Flywheel. No warning just quit working.

Anybody know anything about the 930 clutch let me know.

Dave,
Could you forward me, or post the sordid details of the rear main seal. Maybe thats why my clutch slipped at 100hp.

Wouldnt that be great, instead of spending 1200 on a clutch i could spend 1200 on a seal. Seriously though keep me posted, or turn it into a separate thread.

Thanks

Thanks all, nobody has had the stiff pedal though
Al, I'll e-mail you tonight from home.
Tom, I'll keep you posted (no pun intended), I've heard from Rich Glickel, too.
Zoltan, Thanks! I might be taking it back to Nyack, so if I don't make it...

If the clutch is not slipping I would start looking at the clutch master calendar. The whole system is hydraulic and well the stiffness could be from a seal on the master going bad or becoming corroded. I would check it out. Also check the clutch itself to see just how far gone it really is. Just my .002 worth

It depends on how bad it is, when my clutch went a few months ago, it was just hard to shift, couldnt' shift unless i was b/t 2 and 3k rpms, but it lasted about a week till i took it to the dealer to get it replaced (big mistake, cost 2700 for that and retensioning of the new timing belt and a couple other odd jobs). Good luck!
