Angry How to remove a damaged / broken ring gear to press.plate bolt ??

Apparently left there when the clutch was last replaced, by PO (i doubt at a dealer). The head has sheared off level with the surface.

Whats the best way to get it out? I cant put the motor on the stand until this comes off.

After finally getting the motor out at midnight last night, i'm sidelined by a PO gremlin.

Kel,
Remover the flywheel and then use a stud remover tool to remove the broken bolt. I know it sucks to have to remove the flywheel if you were not intending to (I don't know what you are doing to you car currently that required engine removal)but taking off the flywheel and using a stud remover is the safest method. You could also try using an "easy-out". This would be quicker than removing the flywheel and using a stud-remover but it cold end up much worse. Just keep bumping this topic until you get an answer. You might also try emailing Perry951 or Danno directly. They both have a lot of engine rebuild experience.

Regards,
Max

Ask and you shall recieve.

Best way to do this, IMHO, is to pull the flywheel off. Squirt some penetrant on the rest of the bolt. If you are lucky, there will be enough of the bolt left to get some vise grips on it. If not, and easy out is the best way. If you drill it with the easy out and it does not budge, get a bolt extractor. (about $15 from NAPA). This is a tapered tap that will go into the hole you drilled. Then all you do is remove the bolt, and the reverse threads of the extractor will eventually grab it enough to take it out.

If all else fails, take the crank to a machiene shop and have them pull it. (DO NOT USE HEAT! Bad news for the crank)

Ok.. gotcha. The 12mm cheesehead (triple square) bolts that hold the ring gear into the pressure plate.

Same process, just take the ring gear off the pressure plate and extract the rest of the bolt. It should come out rather easy. I busted off two of them last time I did the clutch.

Word of caution.. don't forget to re-install the ring gear onto the pressure plate. I had mine all back toghther and noticed that it was on the old pressure plate sitting on the floor, and not on the new one installed in the car.

Ok, got the extractor set, but...

this is where i am: i've removed the engine- w/ bellhousing intact (on the motor). With the motor out and after removing fork shaft and bellhousing from back of the motor, i started to remove the ring gear bolts

>>EDIT: these were previously replaced with allen heads (no cheese heads).

[quote]...just take the ring gear off the pressure plate and extract the rest of the bolt.

Maybe i dont understand how this stuff's held together, since i've never tried taking one apart before now. It doesnt seem like i can get the ring gear away from the pressure plate (damaged bolt), nor can i get the pressure plate away from the flywheel!!

Does this make any sense?
