Default NC machine shop

I need a machine shop in North Carolina to do some head work. As some of you know I had my head gasket blow while the car was parked at Arby's on the way down to do the Talladega Grand Prix track day with PileOPorsche.

How does a car run fine and then fill up a cylinder with water while its parked? I dunno but it happened.

Search brings up SpeedWerks in Thomasville. I sent them an email. Any other recommendations?

I can do a valve job/grind for you if needed. LMK. ASE cert, and used to rebuld heads for a living.

Shoot me a PM. I can plane it too if needed.

I can recommend European Performance in Raleigh, if you want them to do the work. Or, try T Hoff (in phonebook) if you take the head to them.

While I have had a good time walking in European Performance and chatting with the guys there, I've heard some bad stories.

Black Forest said they'd want to look at the head before they gave my free estimate.

SpeedWerks said that they'd do resurface, guides, and valve grind for $405.

^ What is T-Hoff? And, uh, welcome to Rennlist?

So what is everyone's take on doing guides, resurfacing, etc? What is and isn't essential?

T-Hoff is a machine shop and parts house in Raliegh. They are also a Bosch parts dist. Also one of the only machine shops I know of that can heat straighten heads in this part of the state.

Thanks for the welcome, just newly registered.... a former lurker.

Curious as to what you've heard. I know the guys there and also know that they are highly regarded by the local PCA members. Their reputation in general is very high. My experience with them has always been top notch. That said they aren't big on doing lots of modifications and definitely favor OEM parts vs. "upgrades". Oh and remember the auto sales there is actually a separate business with separate owners called Motorcar Investments.

I realize the consignment shop is separate, but I know first hand of a car that had an "alignment" there where the tie rod ends weren't even loosened and the lug nuts weren't torqued. Could have been just a one time mistake but still I will pass.

Hmm t-hoff has a store right by Duke's campus. I'll probably stop by and talk to them.

Suspect you are thinking about rebuilding a water-cooled 996 3.4L motor? If so, you would probably receive more [detailed] responses if you posted this question in the 996 Forum, four forums down on the home page.
