Chains or tyre-grip spray?

I got to go to work tomorrow and right now it looks like I will have to bus becaus there is a ton of snow on the residential roads here and I got stuck right now just backing my 944 out of the driveway onto the road.
I don't have the money for snow tires right now plus it only snows a couple times a year here.
anyways I thought about getting some chains (75 bucks) or trying those cans of "tyre-grip" resin spray ($20).
anyone tried either on a 944? I'm scared chains will break and destroy my car and not sure what that tyre-grip spray is good for, i'm guessing not for deep snow.

Tire grip sounds like something for suckers.. just an opinion though.
I would try cords rather than chains, they are the same idea but wires instead of chains.. might be a little less rough feeling.
That said, I've been going around on my mostly worn out summer performance tires during this snow storm.. and the roads could not be much worse. I was able to handle it fine, but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone unless I knew they were of equal driving IQ. without the right tires you really have to take it at a crawl (10-15mph) in most areas, and I have LSD which helps with the hills and getting going.

my problem right now is getting the car to move at all out of my driveway. as soon as I back out of my driveway I'm already stuck. it's pretty deep snow so my tires are getting zero traction. Once I get to the main roads I think i'd be fine but I can leave the residential roads and I dont' feel like busing all week.

I'm in the same position. We have about six inches here in seattle and I'm planning on a 20 mile commute through it tomorrow. I figure it'll be an adventure, I got through about two inches on Friday so I'm trusting in my reasonably new all season tires.

Phone a friend. Seriously. Chains are not a good option with the narrow clearances and proximity of the fuel tank. Check the local Craigslist for used snows of stock or narrower size.

well yeserday I came home from work in this snow and I had to get a couple people to push me out of the parking lot but once I got momentum I kept on going and got home and then got stuck again in the residential roads then had to get two people to push me out again.
the snow is so high in the residential roads the front of my car was plowing the snow.

i'm going to walk to the Canadian tire close to my house right now and see what the main roads look like.
it doesn't snow often here let alone heavy snow like we got so the city hasn't even cleaned up our roads.
i think i'll pass on those tire chains I don't want them coming off and wrecking my car.
but I'll buy one can (20bucks) of that tyre-grip crap and just try it. if it doesn't work then I just wasted 20 bucks.
luckily this snow should be gone in a week as the temps are getting warm again this weekend but it's suppose to snow again this wednesday.
I just don't feel like busing home at night tomorrow when I get off work.

Have you tried Auto Socks yet? They are a special slip on cover that goes over the whole tire. They have worked well for me. Go to www.autosock.us and check it out. I store my 951 in the winter (Canada EH!), but I have a pair for the front of Jeep Grand Cherokee because of the limited clearance. I use regular chains on the rear. They run about $100.00 per pair, but you buy them once. They fold flat when not in use and you cannot harm your 944 by using them. Check them out on the web site.

that autosock thing is interesting but unfortunately it won't help me get to work this week.
low psi in my tire? how low? I also have wider tires in the rear than the front my rears are 215/65r15.

I would not waste your money on the spray... Sounds like a scam to me too. Have driven in the snow all my life and I do not see it solving your problem....
