Default Three types of Mobil 1

Cheapest: "plain" Mobil 1
Middle: Mobil 1 w/ SuperSyn 5W-50 ("recommended by Porsche" on label)
Dearest: Mobil 1 w/ SuperSyn 0W-40 (no mention of Porsche)

I've always used the SuperSyn 5W-50. Anyone using the dearer stuff (or the cheaper stuff for that matter?)

-Mark

I use the Extended Live 15W50 stuff. I think it falls in the "plain" Mobil 1 category.

I was just reading that the Mobil 1 5W-50 w/ SuperSyn may not be generally available in North America... looks like Mobil 1 isn't necessarilly the same product around the world... (just to add to the general confusion and chaos)

Correct. The 5W-50 is not available in North America. They get the 15W-50 instead, I believe.

As for which viscosity to use, I would recommend the SuperSyn 5W-50 (aka "Rally Formula"), as was recommended to me by the Porsche OPC in Switzerland several years ago. The OW-40 stuff is for the new cars. Too thin for our old engine tolerances.

0w means winter weight. At temp it is still 40 weight. Meaning it isn't too thin. For the amount of time it is 0w, it won't matter.

I wasn't referring to the 0 weight being thin, but rather the 40 weight. In a sizzling hot turbo engine, I'd be more worried about the upper weight than the lower anyway.

For years the Panorama tech editor has recommended 20W-50 for these cars. 15W-50 is the equivalent viscosity in Mobil1 synthetic. 5W-50 is essentially the same but still has the desirable 50 upper weight. YMMV.

since I bought my car I was just using the cheapest 5w50 synthetic.

last oil change I tried mobil 1 15w50. says for high performance engines, guess because of the thicker weight. I noticed my oil pressure went up a tiny bit so I'm going to keep on using it. I get it for about 7 bucks a litre.
