OT: dumb *** e-bayers
I saw a 944 part for a meer $10 bucks (1 bidder) with 6days and 22 hours left. Two hours later the item is up to $100 by the second bidder. I feel like e-mailing the dumb *** and saying " why the heck didnt you just bid a dollar more and keep the price down low till the end?" These stupid people who jack up the price right at the beginning of a auction run drive me crazy!!!!!!!!!!! They just dont get it do they.

Actually, it takes 2 fools to run up the price on EBAY.
It took me some time to understand this one, but allow me to elaborate.
The starting bid for an item is $1. Bidder A places a bid, with a maximum bid of $100.
At this point, if noone else bids, Bidder A wins the item for $1.
Bidder B places one bid for $50. Then nothing else happens. Now, Bidder A still wins the item, but this time he pays $51.
Now, if bidder B bid $150 instead of $50, and the auction ends with no other bids, Bidder B wins, but pays $101 (Bidder A's max, plus the minimum bid increment).
So, it's really the second highest bidder (not the winning bidder) that determines the sale price. That being said, if you place a high maximum bid to make sure you get the item, then an inexperienced bidder can "run up" the price on you (but not become the high bidder), having no real interest in buying the item themselves.
I feel your pain. Often for car parts, you need the parts to complete a repair, it's not just something "nice" to have. Good luck in finding what you're looking for.

Sorry if I have done that to you Dan. But I am a firm beleiver in sniping for the part I REALLY REALLY want. To me its all apart of the pearles of open price bidding. I mean if you really need the part, you really need the part. Leave fair and gentelmenly bidding to things like beany babys. LOL

realize i had been talking about this car every waking moment, calling the owner non stop, staring at photos like it was ****.... counting down the seconds until the end, hitting refresh, 3 seconds left... omg i just got the car, i think i might wet my pants.... refresh...... GONE to some guy the owner said never even asked a single question about it *insert fist into wall*
i offered the owner more money if the guy backed out. unfortunately it didnt happen. god that makes me sad, i could be sitting there thinking about what to do with my extra set of fikse wheels right now and looking at my 320hp dyno chart.
the problem was i wasnt really able to afford it right then, i would have been digging a good hole for myself but i wanted the car so i never upped my bid toward the end because i was winning by enough that i felt confident i was getting it.

That car was bought by a Rennlister, there are several posts about it.
How do you know the proxy bid was not $1000 higher? it just so happen to take $50 more to win.
Sorry you missed the buy.

Other bidders don't determine what I want to pay for anything on ebay. I always bid the highest I want to pay and unless someone else wants to pay more, they will not get it no matter when they bid. If they want to pay more for it, it doesn't bother me a bit. If you lose it because you didn't bid enough, you may want to bid what the item is really worth to you and not regret it. I find it a waste of time to sit at the computer waiting for the 10 items I am bidding on for that week. Proxy bidding is the only way to go.

Not that I have bought much on ebay but I use the last second bid strategy. i figure up what my max price is and proxy bid it at the last second. If someone beats me by 1 penny that is okay with me. That way I don't overbid. It is the only technique that makes sense if the item has any number of bidders.

there was a set of 69 camaro/firebird seats on ebay a week ago. starting bid 100. i was watching, and contacted the owner. i was gonna bid at the last minute.
then there is a bid for 100 i bid up to 200 and am not the high bidder. i congratulate the seller, and ask him to forward the winner my email if he wants to sell his old cores.
i then bid on another set and am the high bidder at 175.
next day i see i am the high bidder on both sets. seems the bidder on the first set retracted his bid. moments later he bids the second set up to 375 dollars.
i figure games are being played so i retract my bid on the first set, and re bid up to 150.
seller contacts me and asks what happened. i tell him what i just wrote, and explained i didnt want to bid against myself, because it is known i bid up to 200.
seller ends auction, and relists.
schmuck that retracted his bid emails me that the seller is a fraud, and is selling 68 seats as 69. schmuck doesnt know the difference between 69 base and 69 deluxe interiors. I do!
i bid 150 on the same set, and won them this morning with no other bidders! now i just have to reupholster the whole interior.
sorry about the length.

"Not that I have bought much on ebay but I use the last second bid strategy" by Honkity Hank
Amen to that.
I like the thrill of refreshing and refreshing then "snap" throwing down that last second bid in single digit seconds left. I just make up my mind what is the most I am willing to pay for something then I dont over bid out of emotions and I accept the out come come what may.
