Post What kills tranny's?

I just wondering what are some of the things that kill tranny's? just write down your idea and thoughts. I am basicly looking to see if I do any of these things so I can correct my driving style because 2 tranny's in 6months isnt a good statistic.

First and foremost - lack of the right amount, and right in general lubrication.

HTH!

Droppin' the clutch too hard too many times! Not meant to be smartass or anything, but you don't know what kind of life this car lived before you bought it.

Sometimes when the tranny oil hasn't been changed in a long time residues build up. Then when the oil is changed these residues can free up and cause disturbance. Have heard of a lot of BMW automatics that have had problems because of this.

Agree with Jay. Also, the obvious jerking of shifts, popping the clutch (from a standing start or moving),or not depressing the clutch fully or long enough. On & off the gas suddenly in lower gears.

Was there any commonality of failure with your two, or have you not gotten that far yet?

I'm sure the board will think of other things...

Metal can become brittle due to heat/ cold cycles as well.. i.e Titanic.

Torque beyond the transmisions capabilities, for exmaple putting a 944 NA tranny into an a high hp 951 will result in a blow box before too long, the first 2 gears just can't handle that torque....

But that is probably not what you are doing...

I would think that the you just got to transmissions that were abused before hand, and you just had luck not on your side having both of the fail on you.

Driving at too low revs. It damages both the tranny and the engine.

Most go from wear related problems ,others from lack of lubrication. Picture putting a hammer against a tooth on the gear and trying to break it off.Impossible right ? Now take that hammer and take a swipe at that same tooth and what happens .Yup ,you did it, broke it right off.Now when you get on an older gearbox that has a lot of slop in it ,what do you think those gears are doing ?

Thom,
How does that hurt your tranny? Maybe if the revs are so low the car is bucking aka trying to drive 20 mph uphill in 5th gear. But I don't think too many people make that mistake.

Then again I heard a story on Car Talk where a girl said in the mountains her car would slowly loose power until it would completely stall out. After that it was fine for a while but then sometime later it would happen again. Finally they figured out that she was not downshifting. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

Don't know your techinque, but I don't think these tranny's are meant for speed shifting, like the 'ol Muncie M-22's. Quick shifting, yes, but full, bang-type, speed shifting will doom your tranny, IMHO.

Errrr I know what I mean but I'm sorry if I cannot seem to explain it correctly
Dannno explained it beautifully in another thread.
