944 block deck height?
Hi gang -
I'm doing some research and wanted to find out the 944 engine block deck height. I have an unconfirmed measurment of 230mm (9.055 in.). Is that correct?
Thanks!

I could not find the info anywhere and I have manuals plus spec books. I have two blocks apart at home though and can measure it if you give me the machined base point to start from.

So if I have the girdle off a stripped block at the moment and I place it on a flat table, the bottom end will be C/L of the crank correct? I'm heading for Taco Tuesday so this might have to wait until tomorrow. If I get back early enough I'll measure it tonight.

Well I finally cleared off enough room for the measurement. I had to flip the block cylinder down since the main studs were still in. I placed it on my Powermatic cast iron table saw top. It's very flat and the guide pins were in the miter gauge grooves. There was room to get a piece of printer paper between the table and block in a few places. Anyway from center of crank to top of cylinder (table top actually)I got 9.060; 9.059, 9.062, and 9.060 1-4 respectively. I imagine there is possibly a few thousands added since I measured with a digital depth gauge to the table not the actual top of the cylinder. I hope that helps.

Ah brilliant. Thankyou indeed for doing that; your measurements triangulate nicely with my theoretical value of 9.055 in. In Karl Ludvigsen's literature, he has the deck height of the 944 block as 2 mm less than that of the 928, and I subsequently found a value of 232 mm for the 928 block. Looks like it is 230 mm for the 944 block then, I agree that your measurement may likely have added an extra couple thousands.
Say, I see you're in Elk Grove; I'll keep an eye out for your cars. I'm just up the road in Roseville, if you see a white 968 coupe with a loud (RSBarn) exhaust, be sure to honk or say hello! That's me.
Best,

Glad I could help. If my digi depth gauge had a hook tip it would have been more accurate but close enough. You ought to come down for Taco Tuesday at Rubios in Elk Grove. We do it the 1st Tuesday of every month (just last night in fact) and it's a good group of folks and gearheads. Plenty of water coolers, 951's, S2's, 928's, BMW's, a 930 Slantnose, and other various mutts.
