how many of you guys/gals have this option, and just how rare/desireable is it. my 84 has it, and sometimes i miss the huge sunroof, but then i think of the leaks and/or mechanical woes that i'm missing out on and i feel better.

so how 'bout it, who's got it...

Me neither - but some dope in 89 decided to have a dandy ASC sunroof installed. Now I have to weld it shut again! Thanks, DOPE!

Any hard-toppers wanna buy it? Seems to fit the 944 perfectly

If I could be more pickey when choosing my 951 I would have insisted on not having a sun roof, but they are few and far between......

I know that convention wisdom is that the non-sunroof cars are stiffer, but I've read somewhere the theory that all the bracing around the sunroof opening makes the sunroof cars at least as stiff, maybe stiffer. I realize that there's extra weight up high because of the bracing, roof, & mechanism, but does anybody have any empirical data on the relative stiffness of the two types?

BTW, for whatever reason, my '88 na had no sunroof problems in 6 years of ownership. The one on the 968 has been a pain since day one... <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

Really they are stiffer? I guess that makes sense if they did enough bracing up there, but I figure after a 6 or 8 pt cage goes in the car the difference would be negligable, and I would rather have the car with out the sun roof, I will weld mine shut some day....

My sunroof's out every chance i get! I took it out the first day i got the car (8yrs ago) and the only problem i had was that i had to replace the plastic gears once.

I actually saw a nice red 951 at a Memphis Motorsports track event one year that had the tinted glass roof. He'd just recently gotten the car and was doing the Drivers Ed that day -otherwise i wonder if he'd have been asked to use the metal roof? Anyway, it was gorgeous ...the only one i ever saw til recently when i saw a 'used' Saratoga glass roof on Ebay. Didnt even have the hardware and went for like $175 !! I wanted it but not that bad -it was kinda iffy.

don't worry about not getting the Saratoga top. They look great but lift up and get very noisy at higher speeds.

My biggest gripe about the sunroof is fitting my helmet under it. As it is, I have to recline the stock seat beyond what is optimal. Obviously, an aftermarket seat with siderails would solve this problem.

I've removed the sunroof for autocross, but the leading edge of the opening still hits my helmet.

I'm fond of the massive amount of headroom available in 911's.

And, seeing as how i spend much of my time moving about at eye-popping speeds, then this would merely present an additional problem for me to worry about And i dont need that!! I wouldn't, nay, COULDN'T live without my sunroof. It's amazing to pop it out and let the sun shine in. It's always out for autocross events (for both helmet clearance and less weight) and almost any other time that I'm going to be driving more than a few minutes. You solid roof guys don't know what you're missing!

One aside though: Make damn sure that your wind deflector is in place before hitting the highway topless! Just for fun, while cruising at a tad over 100kph, I lowered mine and was treated to incredible buffeting... I thought the rear hatch was going to blow out!
