Default HELP!!!!!!! not much time left.

So the car temp gauge goes to the middle line then when i stop the temp goes up to the beggining to the yellow box if i stand still for some time (3-5) min then if i turn the A/C and the fans come on and the temp still doesnt go down once i drive the car the the temp goes to the middle. could it be the thermostat? can i drive the car w/o a thermostat till i get home? i have a 10hr trip ahead of me.

verify that your fans are running when your sitting still. It sounds like they arent. if they arent, check your fuses, you may have a fan on the way out and you can just replace the fuse, or you could have a bad temp switch. That would be where i would start.

Unfortunately, removing the thermostat isn't a real easy job on these cars. If the car has the proper amount of coolant, I would try bleeding the cooling system first. If low on coolant, it is either leaking or being consumed. Hopefully it isn't the latter as it would point to head gasket. Are you able to smell coolant when you open the hood and look around under there?

sounds like you have an air pocket. Time to bleed the coolant.

I'm with Dan - sounds like time to bleed.
Especially if you just added coolant.

I hate to say it but ......................... use search!
There are so much that can cause this from something easy like air in the system to something really painful like replacing the seal behind the thermostat.

Its been discussed in great detail, go through the process of elimination and you will solve it.

I went through it recently and after replacing everything and I mean everything, my baby is a pleasure to drive again.

im guessing you have an early car. Guage should stay in the middle most the time and when in traffic or running hot go to the next line above the center, then drop when the thermostat opens or the fans kick on. SOunds like you got it or close.

Sounds good. Both my cars stay within the two lines, but move within that area.
