Default Short shifter? Pro's and con's?

I would like my shifting in my car to be shorter, thus quicker. I have a slight clue about how they work and stuff, (found from searching) but how hard are they to install? Could I use my present shift ****? Who makes and sells the best?

just make sure that you get it installed properly - and don't cut corners; have someone who did it before give you a hand with this

you don't want it to be misaligned, and you want to properly tighten it and adjust it, otherwise you WILL have/cause drivetrain problems and it WILL cost you to get it fixed!

Also I wouldn't bother with anything that just replaces the shift lever. Look for the units that actually bolt to the transmission (as Roman described). Here is a link to Paragon:

http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/944ssk.htm

This type of SSK will allow you to retain your shift ****.

Now that I think about it, I don't know if it will bolt up to a 924...

Would a shop be able to install it?

I dont see why it wouldnt fit on a 924S? Same transmission.

And yes a shop could do it, but you can just do it yourself. You just got to jack up the rear of the car, remove the old linkage on top of the transmission and put in the new short shifter.

I installed the cheapie selling on ebay last week, took about 1.5 hours, fit perfect right out of the box, no adjustments at all. Dramatic improvmnent.

A crafty fellow could make one of these things pretty easy. Bruce

you may want to have someone double check it for you

if you want something cheap, on many cars just unbolt the shifter and cut the rod shorter then thread in new threads and boom - done

but that's like lowering the car by cutting stock springs

good mod, just make sure it's done right

SSK can dramatically reduce the life of the syncros in the trans. I like the stock feel as the "throw" of the shifter, gas pedal and clutch match each other nicely and give our cars a feeling that makes them beg to be "tossed around"

My short shifter cost me $2800 to install.

A bit more than the $70 estimate.

I got a clutch kit, shift rod, sensors etc. thrown in too.

thats what happens when the bolt in the shift rod snaps because the shop that did the clutch before over torqued it.

I put one on my 924S for a while. They're pretty easy to install, and you're not likely to damage anything installing one, unless a bolt breaks or something (sorry Tom). Just follow the directions and use Loctite and/or safety wire on all the bolts. It's not absolutely necessary, but it's alot easier to see what you're doing if you drop the cat-back exhaust section and remove the muffler heat sheild.

I took mine out after a few months and it's sitting in a box in my shed. If you want to try one out, you can have it for $25 shipped.
