for new starters this is true. they use permanent magnets. for old ones they did not use permanent magnets. so they can crack easy now by the material they are made of. hitting an old style starter if it is not engaging wont do any harm at all unless you took a BFH to it.

the same can also be said for the fuel pump.
Dont drop or strike with any object, otherwise damage to the permanent magnets may occur

I've had success using a hammer to instantly repair a stuck starter.
So wait, new starters being sold for the 944 include permanent magnets? Those are brittle.
