Default Starter - "Do Not Strike With Hammer"

I was helping a friend look for a starter for his 944, and I came across this picture:

I had to have a little smile, because it seems when people complain about sticky starter motors, or starters that don't engage, the solution is to hit them with a hammer. Thought you guys might get the same chuckle out of it as I did...

alot of muscle car guys will attest to this; sometimes the solenoids wouldnt engage the motor gear to the ring gear and so theyd whack it with a hammer to get the gears to engage and start the car lol.

GM ftw

I had to do it a few times before the used starter I bought loosened up. It works great now after having to rap it with a hammer a few times.

The reason they don't want you to hit it with a hammer, is because it can cause the internals to crack, thus making it much more expensive for them to rebuild them when you exchange them for a new starter. I still hit them with hammers on occasion, lol.

The most common reason to hit a starter is because
the brushes are worn out and not contacting the armature correctly.
The reason most modern starters are marked "do not hit" is because
the fields are made from brittle magnetic material which wiil break
and fall off, jamming the starter completely.
So, Don`t Hit It!

LOL, I know, its just funny because it is such common advice on here, and hell, I've been guilty of it (well, not a hammer, it was a little erm, 'pencil' wrench I used) as well. There are plenty of reasons not to do it, but when your car is stuck in a parking lot, you do what is necessary some times.

I remember cracking up with laughter when I took the engine cover off a friends outboard motor. The starter motor had the same sticker on it, but was barely legible..... because of all the hammer marks!
