Post rear window tinting (HELP)

I'm having so much trouble tinting my rear window on my 951. I took the car to 3 tint stores and they all had trouble. One store took almost 3 hours trying. Is it that hard to tint the rear window on our cars? Is there any tricks or suggestions on tinting the rear window?

It's hard to get someone to do it right. The hatch has to be one of the most difficult windows to tint. Has anyone in your area with a 944 had it done?

Always ask the shop if they have ever worked on a 944. If they say no, find someone else.

I tinted cars for 8yrs and the 944 is for sure one of the most difficult rear windows to tint. You have to do it in 3 pieces hiding the seams behind the defroster lines and heat shrink the film on the outside of the glass after cutting your pieces. Not an easy car!

Wow, Abby, you sure are handy around cars! Thanks for that tip!

I went and looked at the tint on my car, and you are correct! So that's the secret, thanks for sharing with us.

When I was in the biz, we used the method Abby suggested. Multiple strips with overlaps an the defroster lines, one person on the outside with a heat gun and the other pushing out the "fingers" with a plastic board on the inside. The very bottom/back can be difficult, in very tough situations it is possible to extend the black paint up a few inches so you have less of that bottom curve to deal with (the bottom few inches are obcured by the spoiler anyway). We used the "Bumper Black" paint for this.

The guy who did mine (I also rang five places till I found someone who had done them before) put a 1/2" pinstripe around mine to cover the edges which wern't perfect. Similar idea to what Smitty suggested but very even edges, looks factory

We masked and sprayed the paint, but the pinstripe would certainly be easier and quicker to remove if need be. The paint allowed us to fill in odd shapes / larger sizes (all the way up to where the driver's vision wasn't obscured by the spoiler in some cases).

My tint was done by cutting it into about 8-9 pieces, hid into the defroster lines. I think the installation (11 years ago) predated the heat-shrink style tint.

It lasted about 9 years. Removal was terrible. I don't know if I would do it again, unless I knew I wouldn't have to remove it myself.

Sean down here in AL. had his rear hatch done in one piece. It had the installer put baby powder down, laid out the tint, and used a heat gun to fit it. Here's a link the the thread LINK to tint thread

Gonna get this done as soon as my car gets out of the body shop. Hope this helps.
